Brian Farinas: From Girona Move to Barcelona Renewal
Brian Farinas was almost gone. A ticket to Girona all but printed, his path out of FC Barcelona looked set.
From exit door to renewed faith
A few weeks ago, the 20-year-old midfielder, who wore the armband for Barça Atletic at times last season, was closing in on a permanent move to Estadi Montilivi. Girona, relegated from La Liga last season, were ready to put money on the table: around €1.5 million for 50% of his economic rights.
For a La Masia product who had spent eight years climbing through the academy, it seemed like the classic Barcelona story: grow, impress, then move on for minutes elsewhere.
Then Frenkie de Jong went down.
De Jong’s injury flips the script
The Netherlands international’s injury at the 2026 FIFA World Cup ripped a hole in Hansi Flick’s midfield plans. Once it became clear De Jong would be out for a long spell, the equation changed.
Flick stepped in. He wanted a closer look at Farinas before letting him leave. Pre-season became an audition.
Farinas seized it. The German coach handed him regular minutes over the summer and the youngster responded, stitching together the kind of performances that make technical staffs pause and rethink transfer lists.
The pressure he applied with those displays finally told. Barcelona chose to keep him and instead green-lit the departure of Tommy Marques, the midfielder who made his first-team debut last season and will now leave the club.
Renewal on the table
Farinas has been part of La Masia since 2018, when he arrived from Villarreal. His current deal runs until 2028, but, according to journalist Matteo Moretto, Barcelona and the player’s camp are already working on a renewal now that his continuity is assured.
Last season for Barça Atletic, he produced five goals and seven assists in 33 appearances. Solid numbers, but more importantly, a platform.
A month ago, he looked like Girona’s next project. Today, he walks back into Barcelona’s dressing room as a midfielder Flick wants to test at the highest level.
The door that was almost shut has swung open again. What he does with that space now will shape his Barcelona future.
