Brad Friedel Joins American Consortium for Shrewsbury Town Takeover
Brad Friedel is back in English football – but this time, not between the posts.
The former USA international goalkeeper has emerged as a key figure in an American consortium led by Miami-based businessman Scott Davidson, which is lining up a takeover of struggling League Two side Shrewsbury Town.
Davidson cleared, Wycherley era nearing its end
BBC Shropshire report that Davidson, a 58-year-old real estate magnate, is fronting the bid. On Monday, he passed a major hurdle: both the English Football League and the Independent Football Regulator confirmed he had cleared the owners' and directors' test and can move ahead with the deal.
Talks between Davidson’s group and the club are ongoing. If they reach agreement, it will draw a line under the three-decade reign of 85-year-old chairman Roland Wycherley, who has been at the heart of Shrewsbury’s modern history.
The proposed deal would see both Davidson and Friedel take seats on the Shrewsbury board, with completion expected within the next few weeks if negotiations stay on track.
From Yale and JPMorganChase to the SPFL – and now Shrewsbury
Davidson is hardly a familiar name to most English fans, and Shrewsbury supporters are already digging for details on the man poised to take charge. His CV, though, is striking.
A self-made multi-millionaire, he studied at the Yale School of Management before spending 12 years as a managing director at New York banking giant JPMorganChase. Only after securing his fortune did his involvement in football truly accelerate.
He already has one successful British football project on his record. Since July 2021, Davidson has been a director – and majority shareholder – at The Spartans, the ambitious Scottish League Two club from Edinburgh. Their rise since his arrival has been rapid: promotion out of the Lowland League and now pushing towards SPFL League One.
That surge has been hailed as one of Scottish football’s standout success stories of the past few years. Davidson has also helped drive the growth of Spartans’ football foundation, now regarded as one of the biggest in the UK.
Friedel’s backing and a UEFA ‘A’ licence owner
If Davidson is the strategist, Friedel is the familiar face giving the project footballing weight. The former Liverpool, Blackburn, Aston Villa and Tottenham goalkeeper has been closely involved throughout the takeover process and has spoken in glowing terms about Davidson, describing him as one of the most talented and humble people he has met.
Davidson is not just writing cheques. He holds a UEFA ‘A’ licence – a rarity for a prospective owner. He pursued the qualification, he has said, to better understand exactly what a manager needs and how a club should function on the football side.
That level of preparation has underpinned his work at Spartans. Now, with Friedel alongside him, he is poised to try and replicate that formula at Shrewsbury Town.
If the deal goes through, an 85-year-old chairman steps aside, an American-led era begins, and a League Two club fighting to find its feet will discover just how far this ambitious partnership intends to take it.
