Bournemouth Withdraws Alex Jimenez from Fulham Match Amid Social Media Controversy
AFC Bournemouth have removed right-back Alex Jimenez from their squad to face Fulham after screenshots allegedly showing the defender communicating online with a teenage girl spread across social media on Friday night.
The images, widely shared late in the evening, reportedly show the Spain Under-21 international exchanging messages with a minor before sending a selfie from inside his car, accompanied by a suggestive caption. The club moved quickly once the posts began to circulate.
By Saturday, Bournemouth had confirmed that the 21-year-old would play no part at Craven Cottage while the matter is examined.
“AFC Bournemouth are aware of posts circulating on social media involving right-back, Alex Jimenez. The club understand the seriousness of the matter and it is currently being investigated. As a result, Alex will not be included in the squad for tomorrow’s Premier League game against Fulham and the club will be making no further comment at this time.”
No elaboration. No softening of the language. Just a clear line drawn while the investigation unfolds.
The development lands at a difficult moment for Andoni Iraola in what had been shaping into a landmark season for the south-coast side. Jimenez has been a central figure in Bournemouth’s campaign, trusted regularly in the starting XI and making 32 appearances across competitions.
He has not simply filled a shirt. He has driven Bournemouth’s play from the right, contributing key moments, including a goal in the dramatic 3-2 win over Liverpool in January that underlined the club’s growing ambition under Iraola.
That form has helped keep Bournemouth in the hunt for a first-ever European qualification, a scenario that would have seemed fanciful not long ago. The team’s surge has been built on intensity, continuity and a tight core of regular starters. Jimenez has been part of that core.
His situation now leaves Iraola with an immediate selection problem and a longer-term concern. The defender arrived from AC Milan on loan last September in a deal that carried a £15 million obligation to buy, a clause Bournemouth triggered earlier this year. It was a statement of faith in a young player they believed could anchor the right side of their defence for seasons to come.
Instead, on the eve of another important league fixture, Bournemouth travel to London without him, with the club’s hierarchy and coaching staff forced to confront an issue that stretches well beyond tactics, form or league position.
The investigation will run its course. For now, Jimenez is out of the squad, the club has gone silent beyond its statement, and a season that promised to be remembered purely for football now carries a very different kind of scrutiny.
