Bordeaux Falls to Sixth Tier as Court Confirms Appeal Failure

The verdict is in, and it is brutal for Girondins de Bordeaux.

The Paris Administrative Court has upheld the sanction imposed by the French Football Federation (FFF), confirming the club’s definitive exclusion from the national championships and sending the six-time French champions down to Régional 1, the sixth tier of the pyramid.

A failed rescue and a hard line from the authorities

This ruling closes a chapter that began with bankruptcy proceedings in 2024 and the loss of Bordeaux’s professional status. Once a fixture in European nights, the club is now officially out of all professional competitions.

There was a late attempt to save the institution. Owner Gérard López sold his shares to Sparta Capital for a symbolic one euro, and the new investor put forward a rescue plan built on a 10.6 million euro injection to settle debts and stabilise the finances.

It wasn’t enough.

The court sided with the FFF’s disciplinary bodies, validating the decision to exclude Bordeaux from national-level competitions despite the proposed capital and restructuring plan. Sporting history, fan base, and past glories carried no legal weight in the judgment.

Rebuilding from the bottom

The consequence is stark: Bordeaux must restart from amateur football in Régional 1, far removed from Ligue 1 stadiums and TV cameras. For at least the 2026-2027 season, the club will remain completely outside the professional divisions.

What comes next is not a promotion push or a transfer window drama, but a survival project. New investors, a new structure, new opponents, and a long road back—if there is a way back at all.
