Beşiktaş Dominates Marseille 4-1 in Europa League Opener
Beşiktaş opened their UEFA Europa League season with a statement. Under the lights in Istanbul, they dismantled Marseille 4-1, turning an even first half into a ruthless second‑half showcase.
First Half
The hosts struck first. On 15 minutes, Ilhan Fakili burst into life, exchanging passes with Olaitan before slipping in behind the French side’s back line. One touch to steady himself, one precise finish into the corner, and Beşiktaş had lift-off.
Marseille did not fold. Half an hour in, they carved out an equaliser with a move of real quality. Abdelli launched a long pass to the right, Abdalla drove into the penalty area and drilled a low shot into the far corner. One chance, one cold, clinical response. 1-1, and the noise inside the stadium dipped for the first time.
Just before the break, Beşiktaş should have gone back in front. Orkun Kökçü found himself clean through, only for De Lange to stand tall and win the one-on-one duel. That save dragged Marseille into the dressing room level and still breathing.
Second Half
The reprieve did not last.
Beşiktaş stepped out after half-time with a different edge, and the pressure finally broke Marseille’s resistance. In the 56th minute, Kökçü slipped a pass into Černý, who aimed for the far corner. His shot kissed the post on its way in, a finish as sharp as the move that created it. The hosts had their lead back.
Marseille barely had time to reset. Three minutes later, Kökçü delivered from a corner and defender Murillo rose to meet it, thundering a header into the net. From parity to a two-goal deficit in the space of four brutal minutes – Beşiktaş were in complete control.
The Turkish side kept coming. On 68 minutes, Fakili almost produced the goal of the night, his curling effort beating De Lange but crashing against the crossbar. It felt like a warning that the scoring was not done.
So it proved. In the 81st minute, Beşiktaş stitched together another sharp combination. Vlahovic was involved, Olaitan applied the final pass, and Poku arrived to finish and seal a commanding 4-1 victory.
From a tense first half to a second-half surge, Beşiktaş turned an opening group match into a powerful early marker. If this is their level in Europe, the rest of the group has been warned.
