Bayern Munich's Pursuit of Anthony Gordon Involves Nübel Gamble

Bayern Munich have identified Anthony Gordon as a major attacking target – but they don’t have the cash to simply write Newcastle United a cheque and walk away with one of the Premier League’s most explosive wide forwards.

So they’re trying something else. Something complicated.

According to Bild, the Bundesliga giants want to drive down Newcastle’s asking price by sending Alexander Nübel in the opposite direction as part of a package. With Nick Pope expected to leave St James’ Park, Newcastle are in the market for a new No 1, and Bayern see that need as their opening.

On paper, it fits. In reality, it’s a high-wire act for both clubs.

Nubel: Surplus in Munich, Solution on Tyneside?

Nübel returns to the Allianz Arena this summer after a strong loan spell at Stuttgart and is tied to Bayern until June 2030. His future there, though, is effectively closed off.

Manuel Neuer remains the immovable pillar. Jonas Urbig and Sven Ulreich are locked in behind him. Nübel, 29, is the odd man out.

Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund didn’t bother to dress it up.

“We've had discussions with his management and Alex is also aware of our plans,” Freund said. “We're heading into next season with this trio of goalkeepers; that's the plan.”

That blunt assessment underlines Bayern’s stance: Nübel is an asset to be moved. And if he can help unlock Gordon, all the better.

For Newcastle, the timing is awkward and enticing at once. With Pope edging towards the exit, they need a goalkeeper who can walk into a demanding Premier League dressing room and stabilise a defence that has creaked under injuries and inconsistency. A German international, fresh from a strong Bundesliga campaign, is no small temptation.

But this is not a straight goalkeeper hunt. It’s tied to one of Eddie Howe’s most important attacking weapons.

Bayern’s Attack Rebuild – and the Gordon Question

Bayern’s intent to refresh their frontline has been no secret. The club want more pace, more direct threat, more unpredictability in wide areas. Gordon ticks all three boxes.

Sporting director Max Eberl laid out the framework before Bayern’s DFB Cup final win over Stuttgart in Berlin, speaking at a Bild event.

“We agree that we will sign an attacking player if he is affordable,” Eberl said. “We had a very good discussion and hope that we can make progress.”

Affordable is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Gordon will not come cheap. Newcastle are under no pressure to sell and know the value of a Premier League-ready England international entering his prime. That is why Bayern are pushing the idea of a swap-style structure, with Nübel used to close the financial gap.

The logic from Munich’s side is clear: turn a surplus goalkeeper into leverage for a marquee forward, preserve liquidity, and reshape two positions in one move.

For Newcastle, the calculation is far harsher. Is one new goalkeeper – plus whatever fee Bayern add – worth losing Gordon’s goals, pressing, and relentless running?

World Cup Clock and Transfer Tension

Any resolution will not come quickly. The World Cup in North America hangs over the talks like a traffic light stuck on amber.

Nübel is currently away with Germany at the tournament, his focus fixed on national duty rather than negotiations. Bayern can sketch scenarios, but they can’t close anything while he’s in camp.

On Tyneside, the recruitment team are doing their homework. Robin Risser of Lens has emerged as a younger option under consideration, a different profile to Nübel and one that would point to a longer-term project in goal rather than an immediate, peak-age solution.

That leaves Newcastle with a brutal decision looming. Do they take Bayern’s package, plug a critical hole at the back, and gamble that they can replace Gordon’s influence in attack? Or do they walk away, hold their winger, and pursue another route between the posts?

Howe needs an elite defensive upgrade now. Bayern need an attacker who can ignite their front line. One club will blink first. The other will define its season by what happens next.
