Barcelona's €50m Ferran Torres Deal Boosts Rodri Pursuit
Barcelona’s summer suddenly has a different feel to it. The agreement to sell Ferran Torres to Paris Saint-Germain, worth close to €50 million, has not only reshaped their forward line – it has changed the entire landscape of their pursuit of Manchester City’s midfield anchor, Rodri.
Ferran out, financial room in
The Ferran move is about far more than a sizeable cheque. By cashing in on the Spanish forward, Barcelona ease the pressure on their Financial Fair Play situation and unlock crucial space on the wage and balance-sheet front. For a club that has spent recent windows boxed in by regulations and arithmetic, that matters.
It means they can now approach Manchester City with something they have lacked for a while in major negotiations: genuine room to manoeuvre.
Reports in Spain say the financial gap between the clubs has narrowed over the past few days. Barcelona’s position has strengthened, City’s demands no longer feel out of reach, and there is growing belief that a deal for Rodri can be struck.
This is no longer a case of two clubs miles apart. The difference in valuations is believed to be around €5 million. That turns the conversation from “if” to “how” – less a battle over the fee itself and more a question of structure, bonuses, and timing of payments.
Barcelona have already seen two bids turned away. Those offers came before Ferran’s sale moved from idea to agreement. Now, with that deal in place, the Catalan club can push again, this time with more financial oxygen and a clearer path to meeting City’s conditions.
Negotiations enter the decisive phase
Inside the talks, the focus is now on compromise. Barcelona have their ceiling, City have their line in the sand, and the two sides are working in a much narrower corridor than before.
The Ferran agreement gives Barcelona the ability to edge closer to City’s demands without tripping FFP alarms. It also sends a message: they are serious about reshaping the squad and are prepared to sacrifice a forward to go all-in on a midfielder they see as central to their next cycle.
For City, Rodri remains a cornerstone of Pep Guardiola’s system. Letting him go would always require a compelling proposal. The latest developments at least ensure that Barcelona can present one.
Rodri back to work – for now
On the player’s side, the story is moving at a different speed. Despite the progress between the clubs, Rodri’s transfer is not done, and his routine has not changed in the way Ferran’s did.
The Spain international was still expected to report for Manchester City training, with no late exemption granted as of yesterday. While Ferran had been allowed to step away from sessions as his move advanced, that courtesy has not been extended to Rodri.
He spent Thursday in Madrid, waiting for clarity over his future. Clarity never fully arrived. So he travelled. Rodri was seen at Barajas Airport boarding a flight to Liverpool, from where he would continue on towards Manchester and back into City’s pre-season plans.
That image – a key midfielder flying back to England while negotiations swirl in the background – captures the current state of play. The deal feels close, but not close enough to pull him out of Guardiola’s orbit just yet.
Barcelona now have the money, the flexibility, and a far stronger hand at the table. City still have the player.
