Barcelona have moved quickly to redraw their defensive plans, putting together a three-man shortlist to plug the gap left by Ronald Araújo’s departure.

Hansi Flick began pre-season with Araújo pencilled in as the pillar of his backline. Now the Uruguay international is on his way to the Premier League with Liverpool, and the Spanish champions suddenly find themselves light in the very area they could least afford it.
The response from the sporting department has been immediate. Deco and his recruitment team have thrown their focus on the centre of defence, testing the market and narrowing down profiles that can step straight into a high-pressure role.

According to Sport, Barcelona’s search is currently built around three names: Aymeric Laporte of Athletic Club, Castello Lukeba of RB Leipzig and Natan of Real Betis.
