Barcelona Targets Castello Lukeba for Centre-Back Rebuild
Barcelona’s summer rebuild has a glaring gap at its heart. A new centre-back sits near the top of the club’s to-do list, yet it is also the position where the least concrete progress has been made.
Names have flown around in recent weeks. Aymeric Laporte, Alessandro Bastoni, Castello Lukeba, even Cristian Romero have all been mentioned in passing. None of those links has truly taken off.
Now one of them has moved a step closer to reality.
Direct line to Leipzig
According to SPORT, Barcelona have opened talks with RB Leipzig to ask about Castello Lukeba’s situation and potential price tag. The French defender, left-footed and comfortable building from the back, ticks several of the boxes the club and Hansi Flick are looking for.
Deco and Flick both rate him highly. He has been near the top of their defensive shortlist for some time, viewed internally as one of the standout young centre-backs in Europe.
Lukeba already has interest from the Premier League and options on the table, yet he has stayed put in the Bundesliga so far. The prospect of a move to Barcelona, though, appeals to him, and he is open to making that leap.
His current market value is around €30 million, and Barcelona have contacted Leipzig to find out what the German club would demand to let him go.
Araujo gone, Kounde in the balance
The urgency is clear. Ronald Araujo has already completed his move to Liverpool, leaving Barcelona’s central defence lighter and more exposed than at any point in recent seasons. The need for at least one new centre-back is now non-negotiable.
What happens next with Jules Kounde could define the scale of the operation. The French international has offers and a departure is not off the table. If he leaves, the club will be pushed toward a bigger, more expensive signing at the back.
That is where the internal debate sharpens. Flick is not convinced by some of the names in circulation, including Bastoni and Romero, which narrows the realistic options at the very top level.
Within that context, Lukeba starts to look less like a speculative idea and more like a logical solution. Alongside Laporte, he stands out as one of Barcelona’s most viable defensive targets.
The question now is simple: does the club move decisively for a rising talent, or wait to see if Kounde’s future forces them into an even bolder defensive gamble?
