Barcelona Sells Jofre Torrents to Ajax for €6 Million

FC Barcelona have agreed the sale of Jofre Torrents to AFC Ajax for around €6 million, including fixed fees and variables, in a deal that also sees the Catalan club retain 50% of the player’s rights.

The 19-year-old full-back is set to sign a four-year contract with the Dutch giants and will leave Barcelona after more than half a decade rising through the ranks at La Masia.

Deal sealed on Thursday night

The agreement between the clubs was finalised on Thursday night when the transfer documents were signed, closing the chapter on Torrents’ time in Barcelona before it had truly begun at senior level.

Torrents joined La Masia in 2017 as a ten-year-old and climbed the academy ladder steadily. His reward came last season: four official first-team appearances, his only competitive outings for Barça’s senior side. He also featured in this summer’s pre-season friendlies against CE Europa and Birmingham City, a brief showcase before the club chose a different path for him.

Now that the deal is done, the move is down to logistics. The defender is waiting for Barcelona’s authorisation to travel to Amsterdam. If the green light comes in time, he will fly in the coming hours, undergo his medical and sign immediately. If not, the schedule shifts: he would travel on Sunday, watch his new teammates from the stands, then complete his medical on Monday.

Ajax host Heerenveen at 16:45 on Sunday in the second round of the Eredivisie, and Torrents’ first glimpse of his new club could be as a spectator at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

First step abroad, fierce competition at Ajax

For Torrents, this is a leap into the unknown. It will be his first professional experience outside Spain, and he is walking into a club that demands quick adaptation and high standards.

At Ajax he will battle for minutes with Caio Henrique, the Brazilian full-back who arrived this summer for €10 million. The message from Amsterdam is clear: the position will not be handed to anyone. Torrents is coming to compete, not to be sheltered.

Barcelona, meanwhile, have done a deal that fits the current sporting and financial strategy. The fee, the variables, and the 50% retention of rights give them both immediate income and a stake in the player’s future value.

Torrents’ departure is another move in Deco’s drive to streamline the squad before the transfer window closes. The sporting director wants a leaner group around Hansi Flick, and the academy is feeling the cut.
