Barcelona Benefits from Nico González's Newcastle Transfer
Barcelona no longer have Nico González in their midfield, but his name keeps showing up in their accounts.
The Spanish midfielder’s switch from Manchester City to Newcastle, a deal that could climb to around €56 million plus a possible €4.6 million in add-ons, will again send money back to the Camp Nou offices. Not through a sell-on clause, but via FIFA’s solidarity mechanism.
FIFA’s 5% that keeps on giving
As reported by O Jogo and confirmed by SPORT, Barcelona are in line to receive roughly €1.9 million from the transfer thanks to Nico’s formative years at the club.
Under FIFA rules, 5% of any qualifying transfer fee is set aside for the clubs that trained the player between the ages of 12 and 23. Nico, now 24, spent the bulk of that development window at Barcelona, with a loan stint at Valencia and then a permanent move to Porto completing his path out of La Masia.
The solidarity pot from his Newcastle move will be divided, but Barcelona take the biggest slice: about €1.9 million. Porto are expected to receive around €560,000, while Valencia should collect close to €280,000.
The payments will filter through over the coming months. It is not a game‑changing figure in the context of a €56 million transfer, yet for a club still combing every corner for revenue, it is another useful line on the balance sheet.
A La Masia graduate who keeps paying out
This latest windfall only adds to what Nico has already brought in for Barcelona since leaving.
The club banked €8.5 million when he joined Porto. Manchester City’s move for the midfielder then generated a further €15 million. Add the projected €1.9 million from the Newcastle transfer via the solidarity mechanism, and Nico’s total financial return for Barcelona rises to approximately €25.4 million.
For a player who never fully established himself in the first team at Camp Nou, Nico has become a quietly lucrative success story for La Masia — proof that even when a talent’s future lies elsewhere, their Barcelona education can keep paying off long after they’ve gone.
