Barcelona’s search for a new left-footed centre-back is taking a sharp turn away from the obvious names on everyone’s lips.

Transfer specialist Matteo Moretto has now cut through that noise, stating that Lukeba is not the man Barcelona are currently trying to sign. Not partially. Not “we’ll see.” According to Moretto, the club have ruled out the Frenchman’s profile “100%”, shutting down the idea that the 23-year-old is the mystery defender on the way to Catalonia.
It’s a significant twist. Lukeba would have brought exactly the sort of versatility and left-sided assurance that Barcelona have been chasing, a defender capable of shoring up an area that has looked thin in recent seasons. Yet the club’s recruitment team are clearly walking a different path.
The same goes for another heavily touted name: Goncalo Inacio.
The Sporting CP centre-back has long been linked with top clubs and naturally found himself dragged into the Barcelona conversation once the need for a left-footed defender became public. A Portuguese international, young, technically sound, and used to building from the back – he fit the narrative.
But again, Moretto’s information points the other way. Inacio, like Lukeba, is not part of Barcelona’s current plan. He can also be ruled out of this specific operation.
This is where the story becomes more intriguing.
The key detail from Moretto is not just who Barcelona are not signing, but the level of recognition attached to the player they are actually targeting. The defender in question does not play in Spain and is, as things stand, less widely known than both Lukeba and Inacio. Casual fans are unlikely to recognise the name when it finally surfaces.
That low profile explains the silence. While big moves usually leak early and often, this one has stayed in the shadows. Barcelona are working quietly, deliberately, and far away from the obvious market carousel of headline defenders.
