Barcelona's Final Bid for Rodri: Negotiations Intensify
Barcelona’s pursuit of Rodri is still alive, still moving, but nowhere near the finish-line stroll some expected.
Manchester City have already knocked back a second formal offer from the Catalan club: €60 million guaranteed, plus €10 million in bonuses that would have taken the total package to €70 million. City’s stance has not shifted. They want a fixed fee in the €70–80 million range for a player who, crucially, has just one year left on his contract.
Barça load up what they see as a final bid
According to SPORT, Barcelona believe they have pushed their finances right to the edge for this deal. The proposal rejected late on Wednesday night was, in their eyes, already a stretch.
Talks haven’t collapsed, though. Far from it.
Inside the club, work is now focused on what they consider a definitive offer: a bid expected to reach €65 million fixed, plus €10 million in variables. Around €5 million of those add-ons would be relatively straightforward to achieve, the other €5 million far more difficult.
This is the package Barcelona hope will finally break City’s resistance. The intention is to present it within hours, with a clear objective: secure an agreement quickly enough for Rodri to skip a return trip to Manchester altogether.
Rodri pushing to avoid Manchester return
For now, Rodri is scheduled to report back to Manchester on Friday. He would rather not.
His preference is simple: if the clubs can agree a fee in time, he wants to fly straight to Barcelona and close the chapter on his Premier League spell.
The midfielder is fully aligned with Barça’s efforts. Aware of the financial strain the club is under, he has made concessions in his own contract demands to help make the move possible. He has walked away from figures Real Madrid were prepared to pay, underlining that this decision is being driven by sporting ambitions and personal priorities rather than by the highest salary on offer.
That commitment from the player, both privately and in negotiations, could be decisive in the final stretch.
City plan for life after Rodri
Publicly, Manchester City can still insist they are comfortable keeping Rodri for the final year of his deal. Their moves in the market tell a different story.
The Premier League champions are actively working on midfield reinforcements. Talks are ongoing for players such as Ayyoub Bouaddi and Enzo Fernandez, targets who would help soften the blow if the Spain international does leave.
The message is clear: City do not intend to be caught unprepared.
Deal on a knife-edge
For Barcelona, this has turned into a more gruelling negotiation than first anticipated. City have refused to let contract length dictate a discount, and every extra million has required manoeuvring from a club still wrestling with its financial limits.
Yet the gap is no longer vast. With a new offer set to climb to €65 million plus bonuses, both sides are now close enough that a breakthrough could come at any moment.
