Barcelona Seek Experienced Centre-Back After Araujo Departure
Barcelona’s defensive puzzle has changed shape in a hurry. Ronald Araujo is at Liverpool on loan, and inside the club there is a clear feeling: the back line is too light to survive a full 2026/27 season.
Deco has moved to the front of the stage. According to AS, the sporting director is working flat out in the market, chasing a very specific piece – an experienced, left-footed centre-back who can walk straight into Hansi Flick’s rotation and handle the weight of a Barça shirt from day one.
Right now, the core of the position is Pau Cubarsí, Eric Garcia, Gerard Martin and Andreas Christensen. Four centre-backs for a season that will stretch across La Liga, Europe and domestic cups. It is not much margin for injuries, suspensions or dips in form, and everyone at the club knows it.
Cortés caught in the middle
On paper, Álvaro Cortés could help plug that gap. Flick still sees him as an option. But inside the sporting department, doubts persist about whether he is ready to move from sporadic appearances to the grind of a full season as a regular first-team defender.
There is another twist. Cortés does not want to drop back to Barça Atlètic and has offers from elsewhere. A departure in the coming days is very much on the table, which would strip away yet another layer of depth and turn Deco’s search from important to urgent.
That urgency shapes the profile Barça are chasing. They are not looking for another talent to nurture. They want someone who arrives and immediately raises the level, someone who brings reliability, experience and a natural left foot to balance the defence.
Tight market, tighter profile
Financial limits are never far from any Barcelona decision now, and they weigh heavily on this hunt. The club admire Luka Vuskovic, for example, but watched him head to Brighton. At 19, he was ultimately judged too young for what Deco needs in this window: certainty, not potential.
The same logic applies to Jon Martin of Real Sociedad. Barcelona like the defender, but again, age counts against him for this particular role. The priority is not just quality, but readiness and personality to anchor a back line that has just lost its most imposing presence.
Even Cristian Romero, proven at the highest level and rich in experience, did not fit the brief perfectly. His profile, despite his qualities, did not tick all the boxes for what Barça want in terms of style, side of the pitch and cost.
So the search continues, narrow by design. Barcelona are not trawling for the best centre-back they can find. They are hunting for one very specific solution to a problem Araujo’s departure has laid bare – and time in this window is running out.
