Barcelona Considers Dumfries as Kounde's Future Uncertain
The season has barely closed and Barcelona are already back in their natural habitat: the market, calculator in one hand, scouting reports in the other.
A new centre-forward tops the agenda at the club, but that is not the only position under review. Quietly, but firmly, the right-back slot has moved into focus – and with it, the future of Jules Kounde.
Dumfries back on the radar
Denzel Dumfries has reappeared on Barcelona’s list. Not for the first time.
According to FC Inter News, relayed by SPORT, the Inter Milan defender is once again being studied at the Ciutat Esportiva. The Dutchman looks set for a decisive summer, with his camp already sounding out Europe’s elite over a permanent move away from San Siro.
Dumfries is listening.
His new representatives have already sat down with Liverpool and Barcelona, two clubs that tracked him in previous windows. This time, the approach feels more concrete: Ali Barat, now handling the player’s interests, met Deco only a few days ago to lay out the defender’s situation and explore the possibility of a move.
Barcelona, though, are not rushing. Not yet.
The club’s stance is clear: no significant move for Dumfries unless there is a major outgoing in defence. That outgoing has a name – Kounde.
Kounde at the crossroads
Inside the club, there is no attempt to hide it: Barcelona are willing to listen to offers for the French international.
Kounde has filled in across the back line, often at right-back, but doubts remain over both his performances in that role and his long-term fit in the squad’s construction. As a result, the sporting department expects his situation to be one of the fault lines of the summer. A sale could trigger a chain reaction.
Dumfries knows it too. Any path to Barcelona for him runs straight through Kounde’s future. If the Frenchman stays, the door all but closes. If he leaves, it swings open.
Several scenarios are being weighed at the club, with the sense that Kounde’s case could generate “substantial movement” in the coming weeks.
A €25 million window
The Dumfries deal itself has a clear framework.
The Inter defender has a €25 million release clause that becomes active in July. It is not open-ended. That clause runs for only one month, forcing any interested club to move decisively within that tight window if they want to avoid a drawn-out negotiation with Inter.
Barcelona know this drill well. Twelve months ago, Jorge Mendes – then representing Dumfries – pushed hard to take him to Catalonia. The operation stalled not on interest, but on numbers. Salary limits strangled any realistic chance of completing the move.
Those limits still exist, but the picture is slightly different now. Dumfries’ wages are viewed as manageable if – and only if – Barcelona execute a bold plan of sales to reshape the squad.
Cancelo first, then the dominoes
For all the noise around Dumfries, the immediate priority on the flanks has a different name: João Cancelo.
Barcelona are working to reach an agreement with Al Hilal to keep the Portuguese full-back, whose versatility on both sides of the defence has made him a key piece in their plans. Only once that situation is resolved do they intend to make firm decisions on the rest of the defensive line.
The idea is simple: secure Cancelo, then look at who leaves.
Only after that will the club fully open the file on Dumfries and the right-back position. For now, his name sits on Deco’s desk, marked, not underlined.
Power on the flanks
Inside the sporting department, there is no debate about Dumfries’ profile.
Deco and Hansi Flick both rate the Dutchman. They see in him something the squad lacks: a physically dominant, explosive presence out wide, capable of driving play forward and imposing himself in both boxes. In a team that has often leaned on technical finesse, that kind of raw power has its own appeal.
If the numbers line up, if Kounde’s future brings in the funds and space required, Dumfries becomes a realistic option. If not, he remains another name on the long list of “almost” signings Barcelona have tracked in recent years.
The market will decide. And for Barcelona’s right flank, this summer could define the shape of the defence for years to come.
