Barcelona’s Defensive Puzzle: Laporte Under Consideration

Araujo’s exit opens a door

Ronald Araujo’s loan move to Liverpool has ripped a hole in the heart of the defence and created space for a new central defender, ideally a left-footer to balance the back line.

RB Leipzig’s Castello Lukeba has already resurfaced on Barcelona’s radar after earlier links this summer. His name is back in internal conversations.

But he is not alone.

According to SPORT, Aymeric Laporte has also been offered to the club and is under serious consideration. The Athletic Club defender, a World Cup winner and proven at the highest level, fits the profile on the pitch. Off it, he is a far more complicated decision.

Barcelona demand legal certainty

Inside the club, there is one clear message regarding Laporte: no risks. No grey areas. No surprises.

Barcelona are determined to avoid any repeat of the contractual tension that has poisoned relations with Athletic Club in recent months. For Laporte, that means every legal and contractual element must be crystal clear before the club even thinks about making a formal move.

Laporte’s camp are understood to have put him on the market for a fixed figure tied to his release clause, with the player open to leaving Athletic this summer. The door is not closed from his side.

But Barcelona want more than a number. They want full clarity on:

• and, crucially, Athletic’s stance on the operation.

Once bitten, twice shy with Athletic

That caution has a name: Nico Williams.

The saga around the winger last summer strained an already delicate relationship between Barcelona and Athletic Club. Inside both institutions, those events have not been forgotten. Relations are described as far from ideal.

A perfect fit on the pitch

Purely from a football point of view, Laporte is easy to justify.

He is left-footed, experienced, and comfortable stepping into midfield to build play from the back — exactly the type of defender Barcelona have been considering to complement their current options. He understands positional play, can handle pressure in the first phase, and brings leadership to a back line that has lost a key voice in Araujo.

He also built a strong partnership with Pau Cubarsi at the World Cup, a combination that will not have gone unnoticed at the club. Replicating that understanding at Camp Nou is an appealing prospect, especially for a team trying to re-establish defensive authority while maintaining its identity on the ball.

From a sporting perspective, the move almost sells itself.

Legal first, football second

And yet, that is precisely the point inside Barcelona right now: sporting arguments come second.

The club know Laporte, at 32, could offer immediate reliability and experience in a season that may define the direction of the project. If they decide to bring in a new central defender before the window closes, his name will be on the shortlist in bold.

But only under strict conditions.

The release clause must be attainable. The mechanism must be straightforward. Athletic’s position must be transparent and accepted by all parties before any formal approach is made.

If all of that aligns, Laporte could quickly become one of the most intriguing late-window stories for Barcelona. If not, the club will look elsewhere and leave a World Cup-winning defender on the market, all in the name of avoiding one more war with Athletic Club.
