Manchester City Rejects Barcelona’s Second Bid for Rodri as Transfer Talks Stall

Barcelona have faced another setback in their attempt to sign midfielder Rodri from Manchester City. The Premier League club has rejected a second offer, holding firm on their asking price despite the player's willingness to join the Spanish side.

The Catalan club increased their bid to around €60 million, improving on their first proposal which included €45 million plus €15 million in add-ons. Yet, this was still far from what City expects, reportedly demanding a total of £70 million (approximately €81 million) plus additional performance bonuses. Even with Rodri entering the final year of his contract, City shows no sign of lowering their price.

Rodri’s Preference and Flick’s Influence

Despite stalled negotiations, Rodri remains keen on moving to Barcelona. The transfer interest intensified after a direct call from coach Hansi Flick, who shared his vision for the team with the midfielder. This personal contact seems to have convinced Rodri, who had previously been cautious due to attention from Real Madrid.

His agent, Pablo Barquero, confirmed the player’s decision to join Barcelona to Spanish radio station El Larguero, noting that out of respect for Madrid, Rodri informed them of his choice to move to Barca.

Replacement Challenges for Manchester City

One reason behind City’s firm stance might be the challenge of replacing Rodri, a key figure in their midfield. Manager Enzo Maresca has identified Enzo Fernandez of Chelsea as the top target to fill the role.

However, acquiring Fernandez would be a costly pursuit. Chelsea holds the World Cup winner under contract until 2032 and is demanding £120 million for the Argentine midfielder, making him an expensive replacement.

What Lies Ahead?

Barcelona’s determination to sign a new midfield leader remains strong despite the rejection. The need has become urgent, especially with concerns about Frenkie de Jong’s fitness, who may require surgery for a persistent injury.

With the transfer window closing soon, the situation is tense. While Manchester City has rarely blocked players from leaving if they want to, they insist on receiving their valuation for Rodri. Barcelona must now decide whether to increase their offer significantly or risk losing their main target.

Rodri’s eagerness to join the Spotify Camp Nou could be Barcelona’s best leverage, but without a bigger financial commitment, the deal appears uncertain.
