Barcelona's €90m Bid for Julián Álvarez Takes Shape
FC Barcelona have stopped circling and started striking. On Wednesday, sporting director Deco sat down face to face with Fernando Hidalgo, the agent of Julián Álvarez, in a meeting that underlined just how serious the Catalan club have become about landing the Atlético Madrid forward.
The champions of La Liga are no longer just “interested”. They are preparing a first formal offer.
A bid near the limit
Barcelona’s opening proposal, according to SPORT, is being built around a fee of roughly €90 million plus bonuses. That figure is no accident. The club had already drawn a hard line: no more than €100 million on a centre-forward this summer.
This first bid walks right up to that boundary, leaving only a narrow margin for add-ons and room to manoeuvre in what is expected to be a drawn-out negotiation. Nobody at Barça expects a quick deal or a bargain.
Atlético’s stance explains why. The Madrid club are said to be demanding a very high fee for the Argentina international, aware of both his age and his status as a fully formed, top-level attacker. On top of that, the market around Álvarez is crowded. PSG are described as determined to go after him, while Arsenal continue to keep a close eye on developments.
Barcelona are walking into a fight, not a formality.
Pressure on the player
Inside the talks, Barça have been clear with Álvarez’s camp: if he wants to wear the blaugrana shirt, he needs to show it.
The message to the player and his representatives has been straightforward. Barcelona want Atlético to feel the weight of Álvarez’s preference, to understand that his chosen destination is Camp Nou, even with other European giants circling. Only that kind of stance, the club believe, can shift such a tough negotiation.
Behind the scenes, there is a growing conviction that some sort of gesture has already been made. Details remain under wraps, but within the corridors of the club there is a sense that Álvarez has indicated where he wants to go.
That belief is what keeps Barcelona pushing against a stubborn financial wall.
Flick’s long courtship
Hansi Flick has not been a distant observer in this pursuit. The Barcelona coach has spoken directly with Álvarez several times, outlining the sporting project and the role he envisions for the Argentine in his attack.
Deco, for his part, has maintained constant contact with the player’s entourage for a long period, dating back well before 2026 came into view on any contract horizon. This is not a case of a name suddenly appearing on a shortlist because another deal collapsed.
Inside Barcelona, Álvarez is treated as a priority target, the product of long-term planning rather than a convenient market opening. The club see him as a cornerstone, not a stopgap.
Money, the immovable obstacle
Romance and planning only go so far in modern football. The numbers still rule.
Atlético have no intention of making Álvarez’s exit easy. Their demands are high, and with PSG and Arsenal lurking, they have every reason to hold firm. Barcelona, constrained by their own financial limits, cannot simply outbid everyone in sight.
That tension defines the operation. Ambition on one side, hard economics on the other.
Even so, there is no sense of backing down in Barcelona’s offices. They know the deal will be complex. They know it will be expensive. They know it may go to the final days of the window.
They intend to stay in the race until the very end.
