Balraj Landa's Journey to Southern in Hong Kong

Balraj Landa has traded the fringes of the English Premier League for a leap into the unknown in Hong Kong – and he sounds ready to embrace every part of it.

Released by AFC Bournemouth in February, the 21-year-old attacking midfielder has signed for Southern ahead of the new season, plotting a fresh route for a career that once began in one of English football’s most admired academies.

Landa’s journey has already taken a few sharp turns. After leaving Bournemouth, he dropped into non-league, turning out for Salisbury City and Dorchester Town. Those spells kept him on the pitch and in the shop window, but the real twist came when a familiar name got in touch.

Former Fulham defender and ex-Southern player-manager Zesh Rehman flagged the opportunity in Hong Kong. From there, the move accelerated.

“The decision to come was a no-brainer,” Landa said. His reaction was instant. “My first thought was, ‘What an opportunity to get’.”

For a player looking to reset his trajectory, the appeal was obvious. “It ticks all the boxes for me: it’s a good platform to show myself in Asia, and to really get my name out there,” he explained.

But this is not just a football transfer. It is a life shift.

“On the non-football side, it’s a chance to live on the other side of the world, to adapt and to survive by myself,” he said, underlining the personal challenge as much as the professional one.

Southern are getting a two-footed, “very technical and creative” attacking midfielder, someone comfortable threading passes and operating between the lines. Landa’s foundations were laid early: he was picked up by local club Southampton at just eight years old, growing up in a system renowned for producing polished, intelligent footballers.

Now he swaps the familiarity of the south coast for a very different skyline and a very different league. The question is no longer whether he will take the chance.

It is what he can make of it, alone on the far side of the world.
