Liverpool’s changing of the guard is gathering pace – and for Stefan Bajcetic, it could mean a clean break with Anfield and a return to where it all began.

Liverpool plucked Bajcetic out of Celta Vigo’s academy in December 2020, paying the LaLiga club £224,000 for a 16-year-old they believed could anchor their midfield for years. By the 2022/23 season, that belief seemed justified. Jurgen Klopp trusted him in big moments, the teenager racking up 19 appearances and earning a new long-term contract as a symbol of Liverpool’s future.
Then the momentum stopped.
A string of niggling injuries stalled his rise, and the promise of a breakthrough campaign faded into a grind of rehab and frustration. Since May 2024, he has not played a single competitive minute for Liverpool.
The club responded by sending him out on loan. First to Red Bull Salzburg, then to Las Palmas in the 2024/25 season, searching for rhythm, fitness, and evidence that he could still be the midfielder Liverpool once imagined.
Now, a more definitive decision looms.
According to Faro de Vigo, Bajcetic has become a leading target for his former club, Celta Vigo. Talks have already taken place over a return to Galicia, six years after he first left for Merseyside. The Spanish outlet describes him as “closer than ever to returning home” and states that Celta “wants him back.”
There is, however, one major obstacle.
Celta want Liverpool to terminate the final year of Bajcetic’s contract to make the move viable. With just 12 months left on his deal, Liverpool are unlikely to command a significant fee and are weighing up whether to cut ties now rather than let the situation drift.
One solution is on the table: let him go for nothing, but protect their interests with a future sell-on clause. That way, if Bajcetic rebuilds his career in Spain and earns a big move later, Liverpool still see a return on their early faith.
For a player once tipped as a long-term Anfield midfielder, the turning point now rests on a single decision – whether Liverpool are prepared to rip up that final year and let him walk back to Vigo.
Ramsay heads to St Mirren as Anfield door closes
Bajcetic’s situation comes as Liverpool quietly move on another young name who once carried high expectations.
Calvin Ramsay has left again. This time, it feels final.
Signed from Aberdeen in June 2022 for £4.2m, Ramsay arrived as the energetic, attack-minded right-back who might one day challenge Trent Alexander-Arnold or at least give Liverpool genuine depth on that flank. Instead, his Liverpool career never really got off the ground.
In two years, he has made just four appearances for the club.
Fitness issues and form stalled him, and Liverpool repeatedly looked for solutions away from Anfield. Loans to Preston, Bolton, Wigan and, last season, Kilmarnock followed. Across those four spells, he managed only 26 appearances, with his most sustained run coming at Wigan, where he played 12 times in the 2024/25 campaign.
Now, at 21 and with his Liverpool contract running into its final year, the club have confirmed another move: Ramsay has joined St Mirren on a season-long loan.
There is no option to buy written into the deal. Even so, the reality is stark. With his contract expiring next summer, this loan effectively signals the end of his Anfield career. Liverpool are not building around him, they are clearing the decks.
For St Mirren, it is an intriguing gamble. For Ramsay, it is a lifeline.
Paisley offers minutes, responsibility, and the chance to show he is more than a footnote in Liverpool’s recent recruitment. If he impresses, the Scottish Premiership side could yet push to keep him beyond this season, even if that is not formally agreed now.
As Andoni Iraola reshapes his squad and trims what he sees as deadwood, decisions like these set the tone. Bajcetic may yet find himself back in Vigo, Ramsay is fighting to restart his career in Paisley, and Liverpool’s rebuild moves on without them.
