Manchester City’s latest midfield prodigy Ayyoub Bouaddi is only 18, but the expectations around him already belong to a player a decade older.
He has the mileage to match the hype. Bouaddi has surged past 100 competitive senior appearances, a remarkable haul for someone who should, by rights, still be feeling his way into the professional game.
From Lille’s academy to the world stage
His rise began at Lille, where he forced his way into senior plans early and stayed there. France quickly took notice. Bouaddi pulled on the national shirt at every age group from U16 through to U21, ticking off each level with the same calm assurance he shows on the ball.
Then came the decisive switch. He chose Morocco, aligning himself with a surging national team and targeting the 2026 World Cup with the Atlas Lions. By the time that tournament rolled around, his reputation had already outgrown the label of “prospect”. A big move to one of Europe’s giants felt inevitable.
City made sure it was them.
City win the race for a coveted talent
The Premier League champions moved decisively to secure one of the most coveted young midfielders in the game, beating off elite competition to land his signature. For City, it was a statement about the next generation. For Bouaddi, it was the move he had been working towards since childhood.
He has started quietly in Manchester, eased into Enzo Maresca’s side with two appearances off the bench. The club are not rushing him, but no one is pretending he is there to make up the numbers. Inside the Etihad, the feeling is that it is only a matter of time before his name appears on the team sheet every week.
Bouaddi himself is in no doubt that he has landed in the right place. Speaking to City’s official website after completing his transfer, he laid out exactly why the move made sense to him.
“Manchester City are, for me, the best club in the world. It’s a dream to be here and be able to call myself a City player. I have spent most of my life working hard to become the best player I can be and reach the top of the game.
“I’ve watched City for many years, and I love their style of play. City always try and play quality football. And they have shown they are winners – this club feels like it’s built to win. The squad is world-class and Enzo is a top manager. And I’m really looking forward to playing at the Etihad Stadium, in front of all the fans.
“I have plenty of improving to do. I am only 18. I am happy with the progress I have made so far, but I also know I can improve so much. This is undoubtedly the best place for me to do that. This club demands trophies and I will give everything to make sure we are challenging for every title.”

Inside City’s hierarchy, the excitement is just as clear. Director of football Hugo Viana did not hide the scale of their belief in the teenager.
“Ayyoub’s potential is extremely high - a player equipped with everything a top midfielder needs. At just 18, he already has outstanding football intelligence and that will only improve under the guidance of Enzo.
“We have watched him very, very closely and throughout that process we have become increasingly convinced he is a huge talent who will thrive at City. We are really happy he has joined us and our job now is to ensure we provide him with everything he needs to fulfil his potential.”
For now, Bouaddi waits, learns and comes off the bench. The stage, though, is set. An 18-year-old with over 100 senior games behind him, a World Cup in his sights and a place at the heart of City’s future midfield up for grabs – how long before he takes it?
