Atletico Madrid and Villarreal to Gain Millions from Rodri's Transfer to Barcelona

Following the massive transfer of Rodri from Manchester City to Barcelona, both Atletico Madrid and Villarreal stand to receive a substantial financial boost through FIFA's solidarity mechanism.

Barcelona Strikes Deal for Rodri

Barcelona and Manchester City have agreed in principle on the transfer of the Spanish midfielder, Rodri. The 30-year-old is set to join the Catalan club in a deal reportedly worth an initial €65 million (£55 million) fixed fee, with an additional €10 million (£8.5 million) dependent on performance-related bonuses.

FIFA Solidarity Mechanism Benefits Atletico Madrid

Under FIFA's global solidarity rules, 5% of any international transfer fee must be distributed among clubs involved in a player's development between the ages of 12 and 23. Rodri spent seven formative years at Atletico Madrid's academy before leaving at 17. Because of this, Atletico will receive at least €1.6 million (£1.3 million) from the fixed fee alone, with potential to increase to around €2 million (£1.7 million) if all contractual conditions are met. It's worth noting that Rayo Majadahonda, Rodri’s first youth club, will not receive any payment as he left them before turning 12.

Villarreal Also Earns From the Transfer

The other beneficiaries include Villarreal, where Rodri spent five key seasons, two at youth level and three in their first team. He moved back to Atletico in 2018 before transferring to City a year later. Now, as he heads to Barcelona, Villarreal looks forward to a sizeable payout via the solidarity fund, an unexpected financial gain for the Yellow Submarine.

Awaiting Official Confirmation

The final details of Rodri’s transfer to Camp Nou are being finalized, with an official announcement expected soon. Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick is eager to add the experienced midfielder to his squad ahead of a demanding season in domestic and European competitions.

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid and Villarreal will be watching closely for their solidarity payments, which could help strengthen their squads before the summer transfer window closes.
