Atletico Madrid Issues Strong Statement on Julian Alvarez Transfer

Atletico Madrid have slammed the door on Barcelona’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez – and they’ve done it in public, in blunt terms, and with a clear message for their own player: London or stay put.

Atletico draw a hard line

The Spanish club issued a strikingly strong statement on Thursday, insisting they will not enter into any talks with Barcelona over the 26-year-old striker, despite Alvarez’s clear desire to move to Camp Nou.

“Atletico de Madrid is open to standard transfer market negotiations when conducted in a professional, ethical and respectful manner,” the club said.

“We fully stand behind the club's previously communicated position that FC Barcelona failed to meet these requirements and, as a result, there will not be any negotiation and there is zero consideration of an Alvarez transfer to Barcelona.

“Atletico de Madrid trust that our player will understand the decision and will remain focused on helping the club achieve its goals, just as he has done during the two seasons he has been defending our colours.”

That statement follows an earlier, even more pointed briefing to Marca, Spain’s biggest sports newspaper, where Atletico insisted they – not Alvarez – were the “victims” in the saga.

“The player is being portrayed as the victim, but we are the only victims in this case,” the club told Marca. “[Barcelona] have harmed us both financially and socially. There is a zero-per-cent chance of selling him to Barcelona – it's not about money, it's about dignity.”

Dignity, not negotiation. That’s the stance.

Alvarez caught in the storm

Alvarez did not train on Wednesday and Thursday, but Atletico are adamant that absence is down to illness after a bad night’s sleep on Tuesday, not any manoeuvring over his future.

What is not in doubt is the player’s preference. Alvarez wants Barcelona. Joan Laporta again spoke publicly on Wednesday about the Catalan club’s desire to sign him, dragging the issue back into the spotlight and deepening the tension.

Inside the Metropolitano, that tension has become “extremely tense”, according to Atletico expert Ruben Uria. Outside it, the mood has already turned hostile.

Alvarez’s public wish to leave has gone down badly with supporters. He was booed off after the 2-2 draw with Villarreal on Sunday, a clear sign that the relationship with the fanbase is fraying.

And so another possibility has crept into his thinking: Arsenal.

‘London or staying in Madrid’

Uria believes Atletico’s statement is aimed as much at Alvarez as at Barcelona – and at one other club watching from north London.

“My interpretation of the statement is that Atletico is making it public that it will not negotiate with Barcelona under any circumstances, and that this is not only the CEO's position, but also that of the club and, above all, its majority shareholder, Apollo, one of the largest private equity funds in the world,” he said.

“Absolute support. It's a clear message for Julian: ‘Either you go to London, or you stay. We will never negotiate with Barcelona.’ It's very clear, Julian decides. London or staying in Madrid.”

The choice is stark. The clock is ticking.

Arsenal’s stance: interested, but unconvinced

From Arsenal’s side, the situation is cooler. Their position has not shifted: they still see a deal for Alvarez as very unlikely before the deadline and would need a strong push from the player himself before even opening formal talks with Atletico.

There is, however, a long-standing line of communication. Sporting director Andrea Berta and Atletico CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin remain in regular contact, as they have been all summer. The pair know each other well from their time working together at Atletico Madrid and that relationship keeps channels open.

For now, Arsenal are watching. Not chasing.

Atletico’s contingency plans

Atletico, though, are not standing still. They are already exploring replacements in case Alvarez forces an exit.

One of the names on their list is Arsenal’s own Viktor Gyokeres, with the Spanish club keen to test how open the Premier League side might be to parting with the Sweden international. They have also tracked Nicolas Jackson, but the forward is heading to Aston Villa.

The next 24 to 48 hours are seen as crucial in Madrid. Atletico do not want this saga dragging into the final day of the window. They want clarity – from Alvarez most of all.

Does he stay, repair his image with the fans and re-commit to Diego Simeone’s project? Or does he push hard for a move away, knowing Barcelona is blocked and Arsenal is the only realistic escape route at the top end of the market?

A Premier League detour to Barcelona?

South American football expert Tim Vickery summed up the crossroads facing both club and player.

“It is up to Atletico. They have two options: do they want to keep a player who doesn't want to be there? Or do they want to cash in?

“Clearly, they wouldn't sell to Barcelona and wouldn't sell to Real Madrid if they were interested. That does not leave them with many options; who else could afford him?

“The other options are in the Premier League. I'm not sure he was wildly happy during his time in England. He has got himself in a place where there are not many options.

“Arsenal would give a fantastic narrative. Why not try to be part of the first Champions League at Arsenal?

“Why not be a part of that? And, depending on the terms of the contract, Arsenal could be a stepping stone to Barcelona. But it is up to Atletico.

“I am told that the fans would probably take him back if he has to go back to Atletico. He is a wonderful player, a striker with the soul of a midfielder.”

For now, the story is trapped between principle and ambition. Atletico are defending their dignity. Barcelona are locked out. Arsenal are hovering, but not yet committed.

The next decision belongs to Julian Alvarez. London, Madrid – or a long season living with a choice he never made.
