Aston Villa Sign Mbaye in €55m Deal
Aston Villa have pulled off one of the boldest moves of the window, striking a €55m agreement with Paris Saint-Germain for teenage winger Mbaye.
The fee matches PSG’s valuation and, according to The Athletic, the transfer is now being tied up with the final paperwork underway. All that remains is the formality; the hard work has already been done in the boardroom.
At the heart of it was a powerful connection. Villa chairman Nassef Sawiris and PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi enjoy a strong working relationship, and that bond helped push the deal over the line at a time when Europe’s elite were circling.
Because they were circling.
Liverpool, among others, had tracked Mbaye closely this summer, but Villa moved with conviction and speed. Unai Emery wanted him, the club backed him, and they have landed a player viewed inside the game as a major coup and a snug fit for Emery’s tactical blueprint.
From Versailles to Villa
Mbaye’s rise has been rapid. He joined PSG from FC Versailles 78 in the summer of 2018 and climbed through the academy ranks at pace, long earmarked as one of the standout talents of his age group.
He made his senior debut in August 2024, just 16 years old and already trusted on one of European football’s biggest stages. The opportunities kept coming.
By the time Villa came calling, he had 42 first-team appearances for PSG, with four goals and four assists. Last season alone brought three goals and two assists across 31 games in all competitions, evidence of a teenager adjusting to the demands and rhythm of elite football rather than simply flashing in cameos.
He also etched his name into club history, becoming the youngest player ever to start a competitive fixture for PSG. Ten Ligue 1 starts and one in the Champions League underline that this is not a prospect who has only lived off hype; he has already felt the weight of serious nights in European football.
A new star for Senegal
Mbaye’s development has not been confined to club football.
Initially part of France’s youth setup, he switched allegiance to Senegal and made his senior debut for the African champions in November 2025. Since then, he has collected 15 caps and grown into a key piece of their attacking puzzle.
He played six matches in Senegal’s triumphant 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign, contributing to a historic title win, and then carried that form onto the biggest stage of all. At the 2026 World Cup, he started three games and scored against France on June 16 — a goal that underlined both his talent and his sense of occasion.
Emery’s rebuild gathers pace
For Villa, this is not an isolated swing. It is part of a full-scale reshaping.
The club have already made eight signings in this window, with Nicolas Jackson expected to become the ninth new arrival. The squad is being retooled aggressively, and Mbaye drops into that project as a high-ceiling wide option who can be developed and deployed immediately.
There has been a cost. Morgan Rogers has joined Chelsea in a £117m deal, while Ollie Watkins has departed for Al Hilal, stripping Villa of two major attacking assets and forcing a rethink in the final third.
Mbaye, then, is not just a luxury signing. He is a statement of intent and a cornerstone for what comes next at Villa Park — a teenager with Champions League minutes, a continental trophy, and a World Cup goal already on his CV.
