Aston Villa Closing in on Leon Goretzka Transfer
Aston Villa are closing in on a deal to sign Germany international Leon Goretzka on a free transfer, as Unai Emery moves to rebuild a midfield stripped of some of its biggest names.
The 31-year-old is available after leaving Bayern Munich in the summer and Villa are understood to have held positive talks with the midfielder, who would arrive with a heavyweight CV and a point to prove.
Emery turns to serial winner
Emery has been forced back into the market after Amadou Onana was ruled out until next year with a knee injury picked up while on World Cup duty with Belgium. The plan had been to land Joao Palhinha, Goretzka’s former Bayern team-mate, but the Portuguese midfielder is now expected to join Benfica instead.
So Villa have pivoted to a player who has spent the last decade at the very top.
Goretzka made 312 appearances for Bayern, scoring 51 goals across eight years in Munich. He collected seven Bundesliga titles and lifted the Champions League in 2020, anchoring a side built to dominate both domestically and in Europe. On the international stage, he has 73 caps for Germany and featured three times at this summer’s World Cup.
This is not a speculative signing. It is a move for experience, leadership and instant authority in the middle of the pitch.
Villa’s spine ripped out
Villa need that authority. The core of Emery’s side has been steadily dismantled across a turbulent summer.
Ezri Konsa completed a move to Arsenal on Friday in a deal worth an initial £51m. Morgan Rogers followed him out of the door earlier in the window, joining Chelsea for £117m. Youri Tielemans left for Manchester United in July, while Lucas Digne has already gone back to Paris St-Germain.
Each departure has chipped away at the structure Emery built. Goretzka, if the deal is completed, would walk into a dressing room that has lost not only quality, but also familiarity and continuity.
The message from Villa is clear: if big offers arrive and can be reinvested, no one is completely off limits.
Watkins future still uncertain
That stance extends to Ollie Watkins. The England striker remains the subject of strong interest from Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia and Emery stopped short of offering any guarantees over his future at Villa Park.
Speaking on Friday, the Villa boss laid out the club’s position with blunt honesty.
“We have an issue with him, it's clear. He is our player. We have had offers for him,” Emery said. “I don't want to sell him but it can change because if it's a good option for him and the club and I can replace him in the squad, this is the routine we have and we did before with the players who are leaving.”
That is the reality Villa are operating in: a constant balance between ambition and opportunity, between holding firm and cashing in.
If Goretzka signs, he will arrive as proof that Villa can still attract Champions League-level pedigree even as they sell key pieces. The question now is simple: how many of those pieces will still be in place by the time the window closes?
