Aston Villa Pursue Leon Goretzka on Free Transfer

Aston Villa are closing in on a major midfield coup, with Germany international Leon Goretzka poised to join on a free transfer.

The 31-year-old is available after leaving Bayern Munich in the summer and has held positive talks with Villa, who have moved quickly as Unai Emery reshapes a squad stripped of several key names.

Emery turns to serial winner

Emery has been hunting for midfield reinforcements since Amadou Onana was ruled out until next year with a knee injury picked up while playing for Belgium at the World Cup. That blow left a sizeable hole at the heart of Villa’s side. Goretzka, with his blend of power, experience and pedigree, would fill it in one move.

Villa had been chasing Joao Palhinha, Goretzka’s former Bayern team-mate, but the Portuguese midfielder is now expected to join Benfica instead. The focus swung back to Goretzka – and Villa have wasted little time.

Across eight years in Munich, Goretzka made 312 appearances and scored 51 goals, anchoring a Bayern side that dominated German football. He collected seven Bundesliga titles and lifted the Champions League in 2020, while also amassing 73 caps for Germany and featuring three times at this summer’s World Cup.

This is not a prospect for tomorrow. This is a ready-made leader for today.

Villa rebuild after star exodus

Villa’s move for Goretzka comes against a backdrop of heavy, high-profile departures.

  • Ezri Konsa left for Arsenal on Friday in a deal worth an initial £51m.
  • Morgan Rogers followed the money to Chelsea for £117m.
  • Youri Tielemans joined Manchester United in July, and Lucas Digne sealed a return to Paris St-Germain earlier this month.

Each exit has brought serious funds into Villa Park. Each has also stripped away a layer of experience and personality from Emery’s dressing room. Goretzka, with his medal-laden CV and big-game history, would help plug that gap immediately.

Watkins uncertainty lingers

Even now, the squad is not settled. Emery admitted he cannot guarantee that England striker Ollie Watkins will stay beyond the transfer deadline, with Al-Hilal from Saudi Arabia circling.

“We have an issue with him, it's clear. He is our player. We have had offers for him," Emery said on Friday. "I don't want to sell him but it can change because if it's a good option for him and the club and I can replace him in the squad, this is the routine we have and we did before with the players who are leaving.”

That is the reality at Villa: ambition matched by volatility. Big fees, big decisions, and the constant risk of losing another cornerstone of the project.

Goretzka will not solve every problem. But if Villa get this one over the line, they add a Champions League winner to a squad trying to stay in step with England’s elite while the ground keeps shifting beneath their feet.
