Aston Villa Secure Ibrahim Mbaye from PSG for €55m
Aston Villa have struck a deal with Paris Saint-Germain to sign highly rated winger Ibrahim Mbaye, snatching the 18-year-old from under Liverpool’s nose.
The teenager is heading to the Premier League, just not to Anfield. Liverpool had explored a move as they scoped out long-term options to succeed Mohamed Salah on the right flank, but backed away when they saw the numbers. PSG quoted the Reds around €70 million, a fee that might have come down with time and hard bargaining, but Liverpool chose not to get dragged into a drawn-out negotiation.
They redirected their efforts towards sealing a move for top target Bradley Barcola. That shift in focus opened the door for Villa, who had been lurking in the background for months, to move decisively.
Villa pounce as PSG soften stance
Villa’s interest in Mbaye is not new. The Midlands club pushed for him in January, only to be rebuffed by PSG, who were unwilling to cash in mid-season. That stance has softened.
Mbaye, fresh from a busy year with club and country, wanted more regular minutes. PSG, juggling a stacked forward line and a young player eager for a bigger role, eventually had to bow to the situation and agree to a sale.
According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Villa have now reached an agreement worth €55 million with PSG. The deal has been helped by the strong relationship between PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and Villa co-owner Nassef Sawiris, smoothing talks between the clubs.
The transfer is in the final stages of being completed, with Mbaye expected to sign a long-term contract at Villa Park. The report notes that the Senegal international has been a long-standing target for Villa, not a late panic buy.
A teenager with serious mileage
For a player who only turned 18, Mbaye already carries serious experience. He has made 42 senior appearances for PSG, a notable tally in a side packed with established stars, and has featured for Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations in the winter and at the World Cup this summer.
That exposure came at a cost. After returning from AFCON, Mbaye struggled for minutes in the second half of last season, squeezed by competition and tactical choices. The frustration over limited game time has driven his push for a new challenge.
Unai Emery is ready to give him one. The Villa manager has been keen to add another winger to his squad, someone who can stretch the pitch, attack full-backs and offer a long-term piece in an evolving front line. Mbaye is expected to play a prominent role rather than simply pad out the numbers.
Leao talks stall, Mbaye deal lands
Villa had also been in talks with AC Milan forward Rafael Leao in recent days, exploring a marquee move. Those discussions have not gone their way. Indications are that Leao has opted for Galatasaray as his preferred destination, unconvinced by the terms on offer from the Birmingham club.
That setback could have left Villa scrambling. Instead, the agreement for Mbaye has dropped at exactly the right moment, giving Emery and the recruitment team a high-upside, ready-now option in a key position.
Liverpool walked away. PSG lowered their demands. Villa stayed patient and struck. Now the question is simple: how quickly can an 18-year-old with Champions League and international experience turn potential into Premier League impact?
