Asante Kotoko Faces Setback in Title Chase Against F.C. Samartex

Asante Kotoko’s title chase took another heavy blow on Tuesday morning, as they fell 2-1 at home to F.C. Samartex in a game that underlined just how fragile their season has become.

What began as a rain-interrupted fixture on Monday, resumed in front of a sparse crowd at the Baba Yara Stadium. The stands, usually a wall of red noise, felt subdued. The football on the pitch matched the mood.

Samartex, unfazed by the venue or the occasion, grew stronger as the clock ticked on. After a cagey first half, they struck with precision in the 54th minute. Christian Boateng found the breakthrough, punishing Kotoko’s slack defending to silence what little atmosphere remained in the ground.

Kotoko, chasing the game and their fading title hopes, pushed bodies forward but rarely found rhythm. Passes went astray, attacks broke down, and every Samartex clearance seemed to drain more belief from the home side.

The pressure told again, but at the wrong end for Kotoko.

Six minutes from time, Emmanuel Mammah delivered what looked like the knockout punch, finishing a sweeping move to make it 2-0. The goal felt decisive, a statement from a Samartex side playing with clarity and conviction while their hosts laboured.

Then came late chaos.

On the cusp of full-time, Kotoko finally forced an opening. Elvis Kyei-Baffuor burst into the box and went down under a challenge from Samed Kyei. The referee pointed to the spot and showed the Samartex midfielder a red card for the tackle, leaving the visitors a man down and briefly vulnerable.

It should have been the lifeline.

Kotoko captain Samba O’neil stepped up with the chance to drag his team back into the contest, only to miss the resulting penalty. The groan from the stands said everything about the season: big moments, squandered.

Albert Amoah did manage to pull one back with a consolation goal, restoring a measure of pride but not altering the outcome. The damage had already been done.

When the final whistle went, the numbers told a stark story. This was Kotoko’s fifth home defeat of the campaign, an unthinkable statistic for a club that once turned the Baba Yara Stadium into a fortress.

In the league table, the slip is just as clear. Kotoko remain 4th on 43 points after 28 matches, now eight points adrift of leaders Bibiani Gold Stars. Samartex, by contrast, continue their quiet climb, moving up to 7th with 41 points and growing in confidence with every outing.

For Kotoko, the question now is not just whether they can catch the leaders, but whether they can steady themselves quickly enough to stop a disappointing season from unravelling completely.
