Arteta Targets Alvarez as Arsenal Pursues Major Signing
Mikel Arteta has stepped directly into the negotiations for Julian Alvarez, making a personal pitch to the Atletico Madrid forward as Arsenal push hard for a marquee deal before the transfer window closes, according to El Desmarque.
Arsenal have had Alvarez at the top of their attacking shortlist for some time. The former Man City forward is viewed inside the club as the missing piece in a front line already boosted by Viktor Gyokeres’ impressive first season in north London, where the Swede hit 21 goals. For the technical staff, though, Alvarez’s Champions League pedigree is seen as crucial if Arsenal are to finally get over the line in Europe after last season’s painful final defeat to Paris Saint‑Germain.
Arsenal vs Barca – and Simeone caught in the middle
Diego Simeone has made no secret of his desire to keep Alvarez. Publicly, he wants his compatriot leading the line at Atletico. Behind the scenes, the picture is more complicated.
The Atletico board, wary of strengthening a direct La Liga rival, would far rather sell to Arsenal than to Barcelona. Mundo Deportivo have already reported that the club has tried to nudge Alvarez toward a Premier League move, but so far those efforts have not shifted the player’s preference for Barca.
Arsenal, sensing a rare opportunity, have tried to tilt the scales.
Gyokeres on the table
In a bold attempt to unlock the deal, the Gunners have offered Viktor Gyokeres as part of a swap, according to COPE. The proposal would hand Simeone an immediate, proven replacement while easing the blow of losing one of his key figures.
On paper, it fits neatly. In reality, Alvarez’s camp is holding firm. The Argentine still wants Barcelona.
That stance keeps the Catalan club in the game, but only just. Their finances remain fragile, and Atletico’s valuation of Alvarez stands as a major obstacle. Hansi Flick, already forced to react after Ferran Torres’ move to Paris Saint‑Germain, is scouring the market for attacking options and could even pivot toward Gyokeres if Barca cannot reach the numbers required for Alvarez.
So the same player Arsenal are willing to sacrifice to land Alvarez could yet become Barca’s plan B.
Osimhen talks as Arsenal hedge their bets
Arteta and Arsenal know the Alvarez chase could still collapse. They are acting accordingly.
The club have opened talks for Victor Osimhen as a high‑end alternative, with the Nigerian currently at Galatasaray. Discussions with the Turkish side took place last week, tied into broader negotiations involving teenage prospect Ethan Nwaneri and Gabriel Martinelli.
Osimhen would offer a different profile but the same headline intent: Arsenal want a centrepiece forward to lead a squad they believe is ready to challenge on every front.
Decision time in Madrid
The next few days will shape Arsenal’s entire attacking strategy for the season. A definitive answer from Madrid will either clear the way for Arteta’s plan or force a rapid pivot toward Osimhen or another target.
Arteta’s personal intervention underlines how badly Arsenal want Alvarez. The one thing they cannot control is the player’s reluctance to return to England.
If that doesn’t change, the most ambitious move of their summer could hinge not on money, not on tactics, but on one striker’s heart being set on Barcelona.
