Arteta: Few Players Can Upgrade Arsenal – Marquee Hunt Continues

Mikel Arteta knows exactly where his team stand. Premier League champions, finely tuned, hard to improve. That, he says, is the problem.

After Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Como on Wednesday, the Spaniard laid out the reality of trying to strengthen a title‑winning side and still hinted at a blockbuster move before the window shuts.

“There are very few players in the market that are available” who can lift this starting XI, Arteta admitted. The margins are small now. The expectations aren’t.

Arsenal still chasing a headline signing

Arsenal have already pushed hard at the top end of the market. A major move for Vinicius Jr faded when the Brazilian signed a new contract with Real Madrid, closing off one of the few realistic elite options.

Attention has now shifted to Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez and Paris Saint‑Germain winger Bradley Barcola. Both would come at a premium. Both would be complicated to prise away.

Any deal is likely to dwarf the £75m Arsenal paid for Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes, but the club are prepared to wait for the right opening rather than rush into a compromise.

“We are actively looking to improve,” Arteta said. “Every time we have an opportunity to improve the squad and bring more quality and depth to the squad, we need to do that. We are actively trying to do so.”

Then came the reminder of how brutal this market can be.

“The thing in the market is that it doesn’t just depend on you,” he added. “We are very clear on that.”

Lewis-Skelly shines amid speculation

On the pitch in Como, one of Arsenal’s own stole a slice of the spotlight. Myles Lewis‑Skelly scored and celebrated with clear emotion, a moment that landed against a backdrop of reports that the 19‑year‑old has been offered to Manchester United and Chelsea.

Arteta refused to be drawn into the noise.

“I’m not going to talk about any speculation,” he said. “If there is a speculation about our player, it’s a good sign. That means that we attract attention and they’re doing a good job.”

What he did want to talk about was the youngster’s development. Used in a deeper role during pre‑season, Lewis‑Skelly has been asked to adapt.

“I think he had a really good pre‑season,” Arteta said. “I think we asked him to play in a different position, because he played more as a six, because we lacked central midfielders, obviously with international duties, and I think he had a really consistent pre‑season.”

The message is clear. Arsenal’s bar for external signings is sky‑high, the search for a marquee name continues, and while the club scan the elite end of Europe for the “very few” who can upgrade a champion, one of their most intriguing options might already be in the building.
