Arsenal Targets Liverpool's Vincent Joseph as Academy Strategy Intensifies
Arsenal are closing in on the signing of highly rated Liverpool forward Vincent Joseph, sharpening their focus on hoovering up some of the most coveted teenagers in the country.
An agreement is already in place between Arsenal and the England youth international, according to The Athletic, after Joseph chose not to sign scholarship terms at Anfield this summer when his schoolboy registration expired. The 16-year-old has effectively decided his future lies in north London, not on Merseyside.
Now it comes down to the clubs. Arsenal and Liverpool are in talks over a compensation package for the striker. Because Joseph is under 24 and never signed a professional deal at Anfield, any failure to agree a fee will send the case to a tribunal to set the amount.
The numbers will be argued over. His talent is harder to dispute.
Joseph has been prolific for England at youth level, hitting eight goals in nine games for the under-16s. He also stepped up for Liverpool in the under-18 Premier League last season and made an instant impact, scoring three times in just two appearances.
Arsenal’s academy recruitment team have been aggressive in this market, and Joseph is the latest example of that shift. The club have already beaten Liverpool to another teenage prospect, goalkeeper Phoenix Blayney, underlining a clear strategy to stockpile elite talent before they reach professional terms elsewhere.
Blayney’s move is already mapped out. His father, Alan Blayney, outlined the plan earlier in the summer, explaining that the young keeper is expected to sign a pre-contract when he links up with Arsenal and then commit to a professional deal once he turns 17 in November 2027.
“Everything has been agreed with Arsenal, he just needs to sign the contract,” Alan Blayney told the Belfast Telegraph. “When he's 17, he will sign a professional contract. It's done and dusted and a pre-contract will be signed when the time is right.”
Arsenal are not stopping there. They are also set to complete the signing of Cardiff City youngster Axel Donczew, another marker of how far they are prepared to go to reshape the academy landscape.
Donczew already has a small piece of history to his name. He became Cardiff’s youngest-ever first-team player when he made his debut against Newport County in the EFL Trophy on October 25, aged just 15 years and 234 days.
One club, three teenagers, and a clear message: Arsenal are building for the next decade as fiercely as they are competing for the present.
