Arsenal Target Jack Hinshelwood as Top Priority
Arsenal have already ripped up one script this year by ending a 22-year wait for the Premier League title. Now they are trying to reshape the squad of champions in their own image – and the next move could be a bold raid on Brighton.
Arsenal push ahead in race for Hinshelwood
According to a report from The Sun, Arsenal are currently ahead of Manchester United and Manchester City in the chase for Brighton’s Jack Hinshelwood, with the 21-year-old described as a “top priority” target at the Emirates.
Hinshelwood is Brighton through and through, an academy graduate and the son of former Seagulls defender Adam Hinshelwood. But his performances last season have pushed him firmly into the spotlight. Naturally a defensive midfielder, he has also been trusted higher up the pitch, chipping in with four goals and four assists in the Premier League.
That blend of energy, versatility and end product has clearly caught Mikel Arteta’s eye. The report states that Arteta views Hinshelwood as the “perfect addition” to a squad already strengthened heavily this summer.
Arsenal have moved quickly since lifting the title, landing Bruno Guimaraes, Christos Tzolis, Piero Hincapie and Illan Meslier. The plan has not changed: they still want a centre-back, a winger and possibly a striker. Hinshelwood, though, offers something different – a multi-purpose midfielder who can plug several gaps and grow with a young core.
Brighton, predictably, are in no rush to cash in. Hinshelwood has three years left on his contract, which leaves the Seagulls in a strong position at the negotiating table. Even so, the report suggests that an offer in the region of £43m to £51m could force serious conversations on the south coast.
Centre-back search hits resistance
While the Hinshelwood pursuit gathers pace, Arsenal’s hunt for a new centre-back has run into a few roadblocks.
Ezri Konsa remains the leading candidate. The Aston Villa defender has been heavily linked with a move, and one report on Friday even claimed the transfer was “99% done”. That claim has been cooled.
Transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel on Saturday morning, said only that Konsa “remains on Arsenal’s shortlist” and is “very appreciated” by the club. Admiration, yes. Agreement, not yet.
Arsenal have explored other options, but doors are closing quickly. Romano has ruled out two names: Marc Pubill of Atletico Madrid and Jarell Quansah of Bayer Leverkusen.
On Pubill, Romano was blunt: “The player is not for sale. Atletico Madrid have no intention to sell.”
On Quansah, he revealed that Arsenal went as far as making “official contact” with Leverkusen, only to be rebuffed. “The answer from Leverkusen is that they don’t want to sell the player. So they rejected the approach.”
So the champions push on. A title to defend, a squad still under construction, and a Brighton midfielder at the centre of the next big decision: do Arsenal go all in on Jack Hinshelwood and make him part of the project that has already changed the landscape of English football?
