Arsenal Set to Sign James Scanlon from Manchester United

Arsenal are set to prise exciting teenager James Scanlon away from Manchester United as their aggressive rebuild at Under-21 level gathers pace.

The 19-year-old winger, on United’s books since 2021, is expected to join the Gunners on a free transfer, with a hefty 40 per cent sell-on clause built into the deal. His medical is already done. The final paperwork between the clubs is expected to be wrapped up within the next 48 hours.

This is not a signing to park and forget.

Arsenal do not plan to send Scanlon out on loan straight away. He will start with the Under-21s, but the message around the move is clear: he is arriving with a view to forcing his way into Mikel Arteta’s first-team thinking as quickly as he can.

For a teenager, Scanlon already brings serious senior experience. He has been capped 24 times by Gibraltar, a remarkable tally at his age and a key reason scouts across Europe have been tracking him closely, particularly in Spain.

Sevilla pushed hard to sign him permanently in January. United blocked that and instead sent him to Swindon Town for the second half of last season, preferring a loan to a permanent exit at the time. Arsenal have now stepped in to take advantage as his Old Trafford spell comes to an end.

There is strong internal backing for the move in north London. New Arsenal Under-21 head coach David Horseman worked briefly with Scanlon at United and pushed his name forward, while Chris Perkins, who oversaw academy recruitment at Derby County when Scanlon was rising through their ranks, has also provided glowing assessments.

Scanlon will become the second young player in quick succession to swap Old Trafford for Arsenal. Habeeb Ogunneye has already made the same journey, also on a free transfer and also with a significant sell-on clause attached.

These are not isolated deals. They form part of a deliberate reset.

Arsenal have sharpened their focus on strengthening the Under-21 group, aiming to raise the overall standard and create a more direct pathway into Arteta’s senior squad. The recruitment drive has been busy: 18-year-old striker Igor Tyjon confirmed on Tuesday that he is leaving Blackburn after the Gunners finally secured his signature.

One by one, Arsenal are assembling a new core of prospects. The question now is which of them forces the door open first.
