Arsenal Complete £75 Million Signing of Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle

Arsenal, the reigning Premier League champions, have finalized the acquisition of Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United. The clubs confirmed the deal on Saturday, with reports indicating a transfer fee around £75 million ($101.2 million).

The 28-year-old, who captained Newcastle and featured in 195 matches scoring 31 goals over four and a half seasons, has signed a long-term contract with Arsenal. This move ends a significant chapter for Guimaraes, who previously joined Newcastle from Lyon in January 2022 and helped break the club's 54-year wait for a major trophy by winning the 2023 League Cup under coach Eddie Howe.

Strengthening Arsenal’s Midfield

Guimaraes is the standout signing of Arsenal’s summer window so far, joining recent additions Illan Meslier and Christos Tzolis at the Emirates Stadium. Andrea Berta, Arsenal’s sporting director, expressed optimism about the midfielder’s impact:

"Bruno adds strength to our midfield core. He plays both defensive and box-to-box roles, blending quality with work rate. He consistently contributes goals and assists every season. His arrival will help Mikel Arteta enhance our style of play and boost internal competition—key factors as we pursue major trophies."

Though the exact transfer fee was undisclosed, Newcastle noted it ranks among the top 10 highest fees ever received for a player aged 28 or older.

Guimaraes Reflects on Departure

Reflecting on his time at Newcastle, Guimaraes shared his emotions in a club statement:

"This was one of the toughest decisions I've faced. When I joined, the club faced challenges, and I’m very proud of what we accomplished together. I truly fell in love with this place."

Following Howe’s resignation last week and Matthias Jaissle’s appointment as Newcastle’s new manager, Guimaraes now heads to London to link up with Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.

Upcoming Season Outlook

At Arsenal, Guimaraes will vie for a midfield spot alongside Declan Rice, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Martin Zubimendi, and Mikel Merino. Arsenal’s season begins with the Community Shield clash against Manchester City next Sunday, followed by their Premier League title defense starting away at Coventry five days later.

Newcastle opens their campaign against Liverpool at St James' Park on August 23.
