Arsenal's Pursuit of PSG’s William Pacho: Defensive Depth or Wage Dilemma?
Arsenal might not be finished with their rebuild just yet. Even after a heavyweight summer in the market, Mikel Arteta’s side are being linked with another big defensive piece: Paris Saint-Germain centre-back William Pacho.
According to reports from Bolavip, Arsenal and Manchester City are both tracking the Ecuador international, who only recently signed a new deal at PSG. That fresh contract hasn’t cooled interest. If anything, it underlines how highly he is rated across Europe.
Arsenal stacked at the back – but still looking
On paper, Arsenal’s defence already looks loaded.
This summer brought in Piero Hincapie from Bayer Leverkusen for £34.5m and Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa for £51m, adding to a core that already includes William Saliba, Cristhian Mosquera, Ben White, Gabriel Magalhaes, Jurrien Timber, Riccardo Calafiori and Myles Lewis-Skelly.
Arteta and new sporting director Andrea Berta went for quality over volume in the window, closing business on September 1 after landing Illan Meslier on a free from Leeds, Christos Tzolis for £34.12m from Club Brugge and Bruno Guimaraes in a £75m deal from Newcastle. They also explored an attacking addition, with Morgan Rogers, Vinicius Junior and Julian Alvarez all high on their list, but ultimately chose not to overpay for what they viewed as second-choice options.
Even so, Pacho remains on the radar.
Bolavip report that “the Ecuadorian player still has a market and has entered the plans of teams like Arsenal and Manchester City”, with both Premier League giants prepared to put serious money on the table to tempt him away from the Parc des Princes.
The salary hurdle
This is where the story tightens. Pacho currently earns around €11m a year in Paris. Any Premier League move would require a pay rise.
The report claims Arsenal are “open to making a move” and that “the two giants in England would offer him a very lucrative salary” to persuade the former Eintracht Frankfurt defender. For City, those numbers “wouldn’t be a problem”.
For Arsenal, it is different territory.
Bolavip highlight the internal ceiling at the Emirates: “In Arsenal’s case, it’s a bit more complicated, since the Gunners have the money, but they don’t usually pay these kinds of figures to their players. Their highest-paid defender is Saliba with 14 million per year, and only five players earn more than 11 million.”
If Pacho is to be prised out of PSG, Arsenal would likely have to push close to or beyond that structure. That is the tension at the heart of the pursuit: how far do they bend their wage model for a position that already looks well covered?
Carragher and Wright question Arsenal’s attacking call
While Arsenal weigh up another defender, some big voices in English football are still looking at the other end of the pitch and wondering what might have been.
Jamie Carragher admitted he was stunned Arsenal didn’t move harder for Bradley Barcola in the summer. The winger left PSG for Liverpool, and on The Overlap, Carragher laid out why he thought Arsenal had missed a trick.
“For me with Arsenal, left wing has always felt like where the drop is compared to [Bukayo] Saka, [Martin] Odegaard, [Kai] Havertz,” he said. “The new kid [Christos] Tzolis has made a decent start. But the longer the Barcola thing went on, and then Arsenal didn’t get Vinicius Jr or Alvarez, I was thinking is that [signing Barcola] not the one?”
Arsenal legend Ian Wright backed that view.
“That is the player Arsenal need to sign,” Wright argued. “He comes in from a brilliant PSG side and he’s played with players who are on that level. Now he’s coming into a Liverpool side where he is that superstar and will bring them [his teammates] up there.
“That’s what we needed. Whether you think Morgan Rogers could have done that, I would have been happy with that. But Barcola was available.”
So while the club are being linked with another centre-back on Champions League wages, two of the most respected voices in the game are pointing to the left wing and a missed opportunity.
Arsenal’s squad looks stronger, deeper, and more balanced than at any point under Arteta. The question now is whether the next big cheque goes on yet another defender like Pacho – or finally on the wide forward so many believe could turn them from contenders into something even more dangerous.
