Arsenal Pursues Shakhtar Prodigy Elias as Transfer Window Closes

Arsenal’s preparations for the new Premier League season are not stopping at a statement win in the Community Shield or the marquee signing of Bruno Guimaraes. They are now moving aggressively in the market for one of Europe’s most talked-about young forwards: Kaua Elias Nogueira.

The Gunners have reportedly joined Manchester United and a cluster of top European clubs in the chase for the Shakhtar Donetsk attacker, as the summer window heads into its final stretch.

Champions on the hunt again

Fresh from a controlled 3-0 dismantling of Manchester City in Cardiff, Arsenal are counting down to the defence of their Premier League crown. Coventry City visit the Emirates on Friday night, and Mikel Arteta’s side will walk out as heavy favourites.

Behind the scenes, the squad is still being shaped.

Bruno Guimaraes has already arrived from Newcastle United to stiffen Arsenal’s midfield. The next priority is clear: add a high-level forward before the window closes on September 1. Any lingering hope of prising Vinicius Junior from Real Madrid disappeared when he signed a new deal at the Bernabeu, forcing Arsenal to look elsewhere for attacking stardust.

That search has led them to Ukraine.

Elias lights up Shakhtar

TEAMtalk report that Arsenal are “circling” Elias, who has rapidly turned his £14.5m move from Fluminense in February 2025 into a bargain for Shakhtar. The 20-year-old has produced 15 goals in 49 appearances for the Ukrainian champions, numbers that only tell part of the story.

The performance that truly jolted Europe’s scouts came on August 3.

Shakhtar smashed Kudrivka 5-1 in the domestic top flight, and Elias walked away with a perfect hat-trick – scoring with his left foot, right foot and head. It was the sort of ruthless, all-round display that makes recruitment departments sit up and re-check their budgets.

Arena Lviv was packed with decision-makers that day. Around 10 potential suitors, including Arsenal and Manchester United, were in attendance to watch him dismantle Kudrivka. They did not leave disappointed. They left knowing the race for his signature will be brutal.

Shakhtar value Elias at around £30m. The expectation is clear: he will leave either this summer or at the end of the 2026-27 season. AC Milan and Porto are also on the list of admirers, adding heavyweight competition from Italy and Portugal to the Premier League interest.

Arsenal or Man Utd – who actually needs him?

That is where the story becomes more complicated.

On talent alone, Elias looks ready for a major step. On opportunity, the picture is less straightforward. Breaking into the starting XI at either Arsenal or Manchester United this season would be a serious challenge.

Arteta already has Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz as senior options through the middle in his title-winning side. Both are established, both trusted. At Old Trafford, Michael Carrick can lean on Slovenia international Benjamin Sesko as his central spearhead.

Elias would arrive as the new kid in a crowded room.

For the Brazilian, the decision cannot just be about the badge or the fee. It has to be about minutes. Regular, meaningful, top-level minutes. At 20, his next move will shape the trajectory of his career: star-in-waiting or talent stalled on the bench.

Shakhtar have polished him into one of Europe’s most intriguing young forwards. The question now is simple and ruthless: which club will actually put him on the pitch and let him grow?
