Arsenal Pursues Julian Alvarez as Deadline Day Approaches
Arsenal’s Deadline Day pursuit of Julian Alvarez has flickered back into life, with the Atletico Madrid forward understood to have softened his stance on a move to London.
Mikel Arteta has pushed hard for Alvarez throughout the summer, viewing the Argentine as a dream addition to his attack. Arsenal’s interest cooled earlier in August as they explored an ambitious move for Vinicius Jr, but once that trail went cold, attention swung straight back to the Atletico man and talks restarted last week.
The problem has never been Alvarez’s desire to leave Madrid. He wants out. The problem has been where he wants to go.
The 26-year-old has made no secret that Barcelona is his “dream” destination, and, according to reporting from The Athletic’s David Ornstein last week, he had informed Arteta he was not interested in joining Arsenal. That stance left the Gunners’ pursuit looking all but dead.
Now, though, the picture has shifted.
TEAMtalk report that Arsenal are working quietly in the background to clear a path to north London and that Alvarez is no longer flatly against the idea. He is now said to be open to a move to London, a significant change that has injected late hope into Arsenal’s plans.
There is a catch. Alvarez’s preference is to relocate with members of his extended family, who have been living with him in Madrid. That demand drags the deal beyond simple transfer fees and wages and into the realm of logistics: visas, housing, and the practicalities of moving an entire support network across countries at short notice.
Arsenal, for their part, are understood to be fully aware of those conditions and prepared to help manage them if it means landing their man.
One of the most intriguing elements being discussed is the possibility of a “Barcelona clause” in any agreement. Such a provision could allow Alvarez a defined route to the Catalan club in the future, while giving Arsenal the chance to secure him now.
It would be an unusual compromise, but a revealing one. Arsenal get the forward Arteta has been chasing all summer. Alvarez keeps the door open to the club he has always wanted.
With the window ticking towards its final hours, the question is simple: will that be enough to turn a dream of Barcelona into a detour through north London?
