The biggest obstacle has always been the player’s preference. Alvarez has made it clear that Barcelona is his favoured destination. Atletico, though, are deeply reluctant to strengthen a direct LaLiga rival and are wary of selling to a club that may struggle to fund a £100m-plus deal under their current financial constraints.
That tension has opened a door for Arsenal. Transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano has already revealed that talks over a potential move took place in London, and the latest developments suggest those discussions have moved up a gear. Diario Sport even claim that Alvarez’s “head has turned” towards Emirates Stadium, with Atletico’s stance on Barcelona shifting his focus.

The missing piece in Arteta’s title defence?
The timing of the push for Alvarez is no coincidence. Arsenal opened their Premier League campaign with a commanding 3-0 win over Coventry on Friday night, a performance that underlined the strength of Arteta’s squad in almost every department.

“We think that Alvarez wants to go to Barcelona, but if Arsenal could get Alvarez somehow that is going to light this place up, because then you have a world class striker to go with all the other world class defenders and midfield players,” he said.
