Arsenal Miss Out on Malick Fofana as Sunderland Seals Deadline Day Deal
Arsenal’s late push for attacking reinforcements has taken a major hit, with Malick Fofana slipping from their grasp and heading to Sunderland in a surprise Deadline Day twist.
The Gunners opened talks with Lyon on Monday after identifying the 21-year-old as a key option to bolster their wide areas. Fofana was viewed as a solution to their dwindling depth on the flanks, and discussions were held over a permanent move to north London.
Arsenal, though, drew a line.
Lyon’s price tag – around €40 million – proved too steep, and, according to Santi Aouna and David Ornstein, the club refused to go that high. That hesitation left the door open. A Premier League rival walked straight through it.
Sunderland moved decisively, striking an agreement with Lyon for a €30 million deal plus add-ons, a package that could eventually climb towards the French side’s original demands. While Arsenal haggled, Sunderland closed.
It stings all the more because Fofana was believed to be keen on joining Mikel Arteta’s side. Fabrizio Romano reported that the winger even held talks with the Arsenal manager as the club explored the move. The groundwork was there. The interest was mutual.
But the deal never reached the finishing line. Instead of a flight to London, Fofana is now heading to the north east for a medical, on the brink of a move that few saw coming at the start of the window.
This is not the first time the young winger has been close to the Premier League this summer. Crystal Palace had tracked him earlier in the window and were close to an agreement with Lyon, only for the player to turn down a switch to Selhurst Park. Arsenal, on paper, looked a far more attractive destination. Sunderland, though, are the ones about to unveil him.
Impact on Arsenal
For Arsenal, the timing is brutal.
They are already light on the left flank after sanctioning the departures of Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli in this window, leaving Arteta short of proven options in that zone. The club have tried to reshape their attacking unit, but the exits have outpaced the arrivals.
Ethan Nwaneri is also set to undergo a medical at Borussia Dortmund ahead of a loan move, another attacking talent temporarily off the books. Christos Tzolis has arrived from Club Brugge earlier in the window, yet the plan was clearly to add more firepower out wide.
Instead, Deadline Day has delivered a setback.
Arsenal identified their man, held their talks, and then watched as Sunderland stepped in with a cleaner offer and a quicker route to agreement. On a day when margins are thin and hesitation is punished, the Gunners have been left to ponder whether sticking to their valuation was prudent business – or an opportunity lost in a title-chasing season that will demand every ounce of depth they can find.
