Arsenal Dominates Manchester City 3-0 in Community Shield
Arsenal picked up exactly where they left off.
Mikel Arteta’s side dismantled Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Sunday, delivering a statement performance that felt less like a curtain-raiser and more like a continuation of last season’s title charge.
Riccardo Calafiori needed less than a minute to announce himself. Myles Lewis-Skelly drove into space and whipped a low ball across the area; Calafiori arrived with perfect timing to sweep it home and jolt City before they had even settled into their shape.
The early shock didn’t fade. Arsenal pressed high, snapped into challenges and forced City into mistakes. Enzo Maresca, in his first competitive match in charge, watched on as his side struggled to play through the red shirts swarming all over them.
The pressure told again before the interval. Kai Havertz, increasingly central to Arteta’s attacking structure, doubled the lead with a composed finish that underlined Arsenal’s control of the contest and left City chasing shadows.
Any hope of a response died three minutes after the restart. Martin Odegaard, already dictating the rhythm, produced the game’s standout moment. Collecting the ball in a tight pocket, he glided past Josko Gvardiol, then skipped away from Gianluigi Donnarumma before finding the net to make it 3-0. It was the flourish of a captain who was later named player of the match, and it sealed Arsenal’s 18th Community Shield title.
For Maresca, it was a brutal introduction to life as City manager. For Arsenal, it was confirmation that the standards set last season are now the baseline.
Arteta’s team now pivot quickly to the Premier League opener at the Emirates Stadium on Friday, when newly promoted Coventry City arrive in north London. The mood will be buoyant. The demands will be higher than ever.
And behind the scenes, the club are pushing just as hard.
Arsenal’s recruitment drive shows no sign of easing. According to Sky reporter Patrick Berger, the club have registered their interest in Borussia Dortmund’s chief scout, Sebastian Krug, and made initial contact over a potential move.
Krug has spent close to a decade at Dortmund and has been a key figure in some of the Bundesliga side’s most lucrative deals. He played a central role in identifying and bringing in Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland, transfers that later generated huge income when both players moved on.
Sky Germany reports that talks between Arsenal and Krug have already taken place in London. The Gunners are not alone in their pursuit: Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are also understood to have expressed interest in the highly regarded scout.
Krug has held the chief scout role at Dortmund since 2022 and, since November 2024, has shared the position with Laurent Busser. His current contract runs until 2028, meaning any agreement would require Dortmund’s approval and likely a significant negotiation.
If Arsenal decide to press ahead and strike a deal, it would represent another major investment in the club’s recruitment structure, complementing a summer in which Arteta’s first-team squad has already been strengthened.
On the pitch, Arsenal have landed the first blow of the season. Off it, they are trying to recruit the man who helped unearth Bellingham and Haaland. If they get that one over the line as well, how far can this project go?
