Arsenal are circling as the row between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona over Julian Alvarez grows louder and more bitter, hoping the chaos in Spain nudges the Argentine towards north London.
The Premier League champions sense an opening. While Atletico and Barça trade accusations, Arsenal are preparing what they believe is a compelling, heavyweight offer – both on the pitch and in the bank account.
Spanish outlet Sport reports that Arsenal remain firmly in the race for Alvarez despite the staggering numbers involved. Any deal could climb towards €150 million, a fee that would place the forward among the most expensive signings in history.
The biggest hurdle, though, is not the clubs. It is the player.
Arsenal vs Spain: Alvarez’s dilemma
Alvarez is settled in Spain. He has recently become a father, his family is comfortable, and his life off the pitch is stable. That matters. He also knows England all too well from his time at Manchester City, and he has no burning desire to go back.
To change his mind, Arsenal are leaning on two pillars: the strength of their sporting project and their financial muscle.
On the football side, the pitch is clear. Arsenal can now point to hard evidence: a Premier League title and a run to the Champions League final under Mikel Arteta. This is no longer a promise of what might be; it is a team that competes for everything.
Arteta’s football is another key card. Alvarez is understood to feel far more at ease in a front-foot, attacking side than in Diego Simeone’s Atletico, where long spells are spent tracking back and defending deep. Too often, when he does start attacks for Atletico, he receives the ball far from goal, with a long way to travel and heavy traffic to beat.
His level suggests a more ruthless output in a team that lives in the final third. Arsenal can offer exactly that.
The money on the table
Then comes the salary. Arsenal are ready to put forward a contract that sits in the bracket of Europe’s top earners. For Alvarez, abandoning the dream of Barcelona would only make sense if the financial reward is enormous.
The numbers to tempt him back to England would need to be significantly higher than what he could command staying in La Liga. Arsenal know this. They are preparing to pay for it.
Even so, the deal remains a maze. Emotions, family life, footballing style, and money are all pulling in different directions. Yet if the Spanish storm leaves Alvarez boxed in, the English option could end up as his only viable escape route.
Atletico and Barcelona at war
While Alvarez weighs up his future, the clubs around him are locked in open conflict.
Atletico Madrid’s general manager, Miguel Angel Gil Marin, launched a fierce public attack on Barcelona, accusing the Catalan side of “falseness” in their handling of the pursuit. Barcelona vice-president Rafael Yuste hit back, claiming Atletico had “crossed the red line”.
The tension is obvious. Atletico believe Barcelona acted behind their back, making direct contact with Alvarez without proper conduct between clubs. Barcelona insist they have behaved transparently from the outset, pointing to a €100 million offer they say remains on the table.
Joan Laporta has made it clear: Barcelona have not definitively closed the Alvarez file. They still want him. The problem is Atletico’s stance. The Madrid club are refusing to move, and the deal is growing more complicated by the day.
For Barcelona, Alvarez is now the only name left in bold at centre-forward. Other options have been discarded, including Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez, who had previously been considered a serious alternative.
Arsenal wait, and watch
Amid the noise, Arsenal are in no rush. They know the market stays open until midnight on 1 September. Time, for now, is an ally.
