Arsenal's Goalkeeping Dilemma: Illan Meslier's Ambition Questioned
Arsenal’s move for Illan Meslier was supposed to be simple: experienced cover behind David Raya and Kepa Arrizabalaga for a team defending its Premier League crown. To some, though, it looks like a goalkeeper giving up the fight.
Andy Stack, the former Arsenal stopper, cannot get his head around it.
Meslier, 26, arrived in north London on a free after his Leeds United contract expired, ending a six-year spell at Elland Road that brought 215 appearances and a reputation as a proven Premier League keeper. On paper, he offers depth and know-how. To Stack, it looks like a surrender.
“I question him, I really do question the goalkeeper,” Stack told Metro, baffled by the Frenchman’s decision to accept a third-choice role. “He’s got Premier League experience, he’s played countless games in the Premier League, he’s got bundles of experience, been at Leeds for I don’t know how many years.
“He’s played loads of games, and maybe he doesn’t have that burning desire to go and play games and put himself under pressure. Maybe that’s what he’s after.
“But I’m just surprised with someone of Meslier’s quality that he’s decided to almost chuck the towel in and be a number three.”
Academy questions as Setford pushed aside
The debate for Stack isn’t only about Meslier’s ambition. It cuts into Arsenal’s identity.
By signing another senior goalkeeper to sit behind Raya and Arrizabalaga, the club has effectively nudged 20-year-old Tommy Setford towards the exit door, at least temporarily. The youngster is expected to leave on loan in search of regular minutes, his path to even a bench role now blocked.
For a club that prides itself on its academy, that jars with Stack.
“Look, he’s experienced, but it’s highly unlikely that you would use him,” he said of Meslier’s likely role. “My question is, is there not another goalkeeper at Arsenal Football Club that’s capable of that?
“What are they doing at the club that they’re not producing any goalies? They just keep signing goalies. At what point is there going to be an Arsenal goalkeeper that’s going to, not even break through, but I’m talking about being a number three.”
It’s a stinging assessment: Arsenal, champions of England, turning outward for a third-choice keeper rather than trusting one of their own.
Meslier sees the move very differently
Inside the camp, the mood is very different to Stack’s scepticism.
Meslier has already pulled on an Arsenal shirt, featuring in a pre-season friendly against Girona, and speaks like a man who sees this not as a soft landing but as a step to the top of the game.
After promotion highs and a brutal low – frozen out by Daniel Farke in his final year at Leeds – the Frenchman has chosen a reset at the very top end of English football.
“I’m extremely happy. It's a great day for me because I have just joined the champions. For me, Arsenal is the biggest club in England,” he told the club’s official website.
“I'm very happy and very proud to join Arsenal. I cannot wait to show the love that I've got for this badge, and I cannot wait to win trophies with this team, because this is a club that needs to lift trophies again and again.”
For Meslier, the move is not about accepting obscurity. It is about medals, pressure at the sharp end, and the chance to rebuild under Mikel Arteta in a dressing room that expects to win.
“Arsenal will win it”: Stack backs champions to defend title
Stack may be unconvinced by the goalkeeping reshuffle, but his view of Arsenal’s season is anything but negative.
He sees a club arming itself to stay on top. Bruno Guimaraes has arrived as the headline addition, with Piero Hincapie and Christos Tzolis also through the door. It’s a window that screams intent, and Stack believes it tilts the title race their way again.
“Absolutely, Arsenal will win it,” he said, without hesitation. “I think Arsenal will be buzzing after last year, and think it’s a situation now where it’s basically the monkey off their back.
“They will be going into the season absolutely buzzing, and with the signing of Guimaraes and probably more to come between now and the start of the season, I think they will definitely strengthen.
“I fancy Arsenal to go and win it, but I think that it will be a close-run race with Man City, I think City will be close behind them.”
So Arsenal head into the new campaign with a stacked squad, a crowded goalkeeping union, and a former player questioning the hunger of their newest recruit. If Meslier wants to prove he hasn’t “chucked the towel in”, there is only one way to do it: force his way into a title-winning team that looks determined to stay exactly where it is.
