Arsenal Eyes Julian Alvarez as Atletico Closes Door on Barcelona
The Julian Alvarez saga has twisted again – and this time Arsenal are very much in the frame.
All summer, the Argentina international has pushed for Barcelona. That has been his message, publicly and privately: he wants Barça, nothing else. The stance has strained his relationship with Atletico Madrid and a large section of their support, but the forward has kept pushing in that direction.
Atletico, though, have drawn a hard line.
On Thursday, CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin delivered one of the strongest public rebukes of Barcelona seen in recent years, making it clear that, as long as he is in charge, there will be no deal with the Catalan club for Alvarez.
“The truth is that it outrages us even more; we are repulsed by the dishonesty, the lack of ethics, transparency and professionalism, and we can only insist that we will not negotiate with Barcelona under any circumstances,” Gil Marin said.
“I have the support of everyone working with me, from shareholders to directors, and the only certain and firm decision is that we will not negotiate with Barcelona under any circumstances. You have my word – the player [Alvarez] will most certainly not be transferred to Barcelona.”
That statement changed the temperature of the market. With Barcelona effectively locked out, one serious route remains open.
Arsenal.
Romano: ‘Arsenal are there. Arsenal are waiting.’
Italian transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has underlined that Arsenal’s interest is not a rumour parked on the sidelines but an active, thought‑out play as the window ticks into its final days.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said: “I know I’ve been on this one for a few days and many of you don’t believe it but I keep telling you that Arsenal are there for Julian Alvarez. Arsenal are there. Arsenal are waiting. Arsenal have their own strategy, I think it’s a real strategy.”
This is not, he stressed, a case of a club idly monitoring a situation.
“It’s not that Arsenal are just there looking at the situation. Arsenal are in the background because obviously Arsenal need to respect the player, his family, his agents, the player decides. So Arsenal can only wait but at the same time, while they are waiting and while they are in the background, Arsenal are active in the conversations.”
According to Romano, Arsenal have already told Atletico Madrid they are prepared to do business and try to reach an agreement if Alvarez gives the green light.
The financial side is also in place. The expected sale of Gabriel Martinelli – with the final fee projected somewhere between £50m and £60m – adds to funds generated in recent months and, in Romano’s words, “gives Arsenal space to make business for Julian Alvarez”.
“So Arsenal will be ready to sit at the table with Atletico Madrid and to reach an agreement,” he said. “Now they are waiting on Julian and any moment, when it’s just four or five days to go, any moment could be the moment.”
The clock is ticking. And that’s exactly when transfer markets tend to crack open.
‘If there is no other way’
Romano framed the situation in simple terms: real people, real decisions, very little time.
“If at any moment Julian Alvarez or his agent call Arsenal to tell them ‘okay we want to come because there is no other way’ Arsenal will be ready. So get ready for this scenario because it’s not impossible. Arsenal are there for Julian and we have to follow the situation but this depends on the player.”
Up to now, Alvarez has repeated the same line: Barcelona or nothing.
“Until today, until tonight, until the recent hours, Julian always said only Barcelona, ‘I want Barcelona, my dream is Barcelona’ but Arsenal keep waiting and remain on their position,” Romano explained.
What changed was Gil Marin’s public intervention after the Champions League draw. The Atletico CEO didn’t just rule out a move now – he shut the door for as long as he remains in charge.
“He said ‘until and as long as I will be here as Atletico Madrid CEO, forget about Julian Alvarez to Barcelona,’” Romano reported. “So not just for this transfer window, he said as long as I will be the CEO. So that means not just this transfer window but also for the future the message is very strong.”
Gil Marin did, though, leave a different door ajar.
“So the message then when it’s talking about other clubs he said ‘if he doesn’t want to stay in Madrid, no to Barcelona, but we are open to finding a solution’,” Romano said.
That is where Arsenal come in.
“Guys, the message from Atletico Madrid is very clear: if Julian wants to go to Arsenal please go. You are free to go. They would love to keep Julian, obviously, Atletico Madrid would love to continue with Julian to have a new chance to continue together. But if Julian wants to go and if Julian will ask to go they know that Arsenal are there. So, it’s on Julian to decide what he wants to do.”
For Arsenal, this is a waiting game, but not a passive one. The structure is ready, the money is there, Atletico are willing to talk. The only missing piece is the player’s change of heart.
Romano’s verdict is blunt: “This Arsenal scenario should not be underestimated.”
With four or five days left in the window and Barcelona’s path blocked by Atletico’s fury, the next phone call from Julian Alvarez or his camp could decide whether he stays in Madrid, digs in for an impossible dream, or walks into a new role at the Emirates.
