Anthony Martial Set for Málaga Lifeline
Anthony Martial is closing in on an unexpected new chapter in Spain, with Málaga in advanced talks to sign the free agent forward.
According to Santi Aouna of Foot Mercato, the Andalusian club are pushing to bring in the 30-year-old, who has been without a team for two months following the termination of his contract with CF Monterrey.
“Málaga are in advanced negotiations with Anthony Martial,” Aouna reported on X. “Talks between the two parties are progressing and an agreement is close.”
A fallen prodigy searching for a spark
Málaga, back in LaLiga after years in the wilderness, need help. Promotion in the summer brought optimism, but the reality of top-flight life has hit hard: they sit 18th with just three points. A deal for Martial would be a gamble, but also a statement that they are willing to back talent with a point to prove.
Martial once embodied that word: talent. A sensation at AS Monaco, he looked destined for the elite when Manchester United paid at least €60 million to prise him from the principality. His early performances at Old Trafford suggested the fee might even be a bargain.
Then the trajectory flattened.
His development stalled, his influence faded, and a loan spell at Sevilla did little to revive his reputation. By 2024, the story had soured to the point that Manchester United terminated his contract while he was injured, with his deal already running down.
A career drifting, one move at a time
What followed was a tour of short-lived chances.
Martial joined AEK Athens a few months later and scored nine goals, but the relationship cooled quickly and the club moved him on. He then headed to Mexico and Monterrey, chasing a fresh start and minutes on the pitch.
The reset never truly came.
His contract with Monterrey, initially running until mid-2027, was abruptly terminated in July for reasons that have not been made clear. Martial left after 20 appearances, with one goal and three assists to his name.
For a player capped 30 times by France, that return underlined a harsh reality: a career once mapped out for the very top now risks fading away in fragments.
Málaga’s risk, Martial’s last big chance?
That is what makes Málaga’s interest so intriguing. A struggling LaLiga side, short on cutting edge, turning to a former wonderkid whose star has dimmed but not yet gone out.
For Martial, this is not just another move. It looks like a lifeline. A chance to prove there is still something left of the player who once electrified defences in France and England.
If the agreement is finalised, Málaga will be betting that, in the right environment and with regular football, the 30-year-old can still tilt matches in their favour.
