Anthony Gordon Completes £69.3m Move to Barcelona
Anthony Gordon has completed a blockbuster move to Barcelona from Newcastle United, signing a five-year contract in a deal believed to be worth £69.3m.
Both clubs confirmed the transfer on Friday night, with Barcelona announcing that the 25-year-old winger has committed “for the next five seasons, until June 30, 2031”, and hailing him as their latest blaugrana addition. For Newcastle, it marks the end of a short but striking chapter.
The move continues a rapid rise. Gordon only joined Newcastle from Everton in January 2023 for £40m, arriving on Tyneside as a talented but unsettled player. In his own words, he was “quite lost both in life and in football” when he walked through the doors at St James’ Park.
Newcastle, he says, changed that.
“I owe this club a lot because, when I arrived, I was quite lost both in life and and in football,” Gordon told the club’s official website as the transfer was confirmed. “The club has given me a sense of belonging and a sense of identity. It’s allowed me to do what I always thought I could do. It’s put me on the biggest stage and allowed me to perform for the shirt.
“Since coming to the club, I feel I’ve improved a lot on the pitch but this club has played a big part in the person I’ve become over the last three-and-a-half years.
“It was really important for me to leave this place in a good way because I’ve loved every single minute of being a part of Newcastle United. This is an incredible club and one that I’ll never forget. I’ll be a fan for the rest of my life.”
Those are not the words of a player forcing an exit. They read more like a farewell letter from someone who knows what this move means for his career, and what Newcastle meant to his development.
From Newcastle’s side, the tone mixed disappointment with realism. Head coach Eddie Howe did not hide the club’s feelings.
Newcastle are “disappointed to lose Anthony”, he admitted, but he also acknowledged the scale of the opportunity now in front of the England international. “He has been a big part of our success in recent years … He leaves with our best wishes, and I am confident that he will go onto be a success, both with Barcelona and the national team at this year’s World Cup.”
For Barcelona, this is a statement signing. A Premier League-hardened winger in his mid‑twenties, arriving at Camp Nou at the peak of his athletic powers, locked in until 2031. For Newcastle, it is a significant undisclosed fee, a major asset cashed in at a time when financial decisions are under intense scrutiny.
The deal also came with a race against the calendar. Although the transfer window does not officially open until 15 June, Barcelona pushed to finalise the agreement and stage the unveiling before Gordon joins up with England for World Cup duty on Monday. The Spanish club wanted their new winger in the shirt, in the photos, in the headlines, before he disappears into international football.
Gordon has already taken that first symbolic step, participating in an unveiling event in Spain shortly after the announcement. The formalities of registration will follow once the window opens, but the direction of travel is set.
From Goodison Park to St James’ Park and now to Camp Nou in the space of three and a half years: Gordon’s journey has accelerated at remarkable speed. The next chapter plays out under the lights of Barcelona and on the World Cup stage.
