Andoni Iraola Confirms Jeremy Jacquet’s Return Date as Liverpool Prepares for Como Friendlies
Jeremy Jacquet Nears Liverpool Debut After Injury
Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has revealed that defender Jeremy Jacquet is close to making his first appearance for the club this pre-season. The French defender, signed from Rennes for up to £60 million, has been managed carefully following a shoulder injury and is expected to feature in the upcoming double-header against Como.
Jacquet’s Progress and Injury Management
Supporters have been waiting eagerly to see Jacquet in action. The 21-year-old missed the early pre-season games, including the recent 3-2 loss to Monaco at Anfield. He spent the last week training separately as he continues his rehabilitation from a shoulder issue that arose shortly after his January transfer agreement.
Speaking after the Monaco game, Iraola explained the cautious approach: "Jeremy was doubtful for today’s match, so we decided not to pick him. But he should be ready for the next one." This suggests the medical team is happy with Jacquet’s recovery and that a debut could come as soon as next Sunday.
The careful handling of Jacquet’s condition comes after his shoulder surgery, which required extra attention during pre-season. Although he trained well initially, some discomfort prompted Liverpool to proceed with caution, especially given Joe Gomez's recent injury situation.
Bolstering Liverpool’s Defense
Jacquet’s return is timely, considering Liverpool’s defensive challenges. In the friendly against Monaco, only Virgil van Dijk and Ifeanyi Ndukwe were fit specialist centre-backs available. While Ndukwe showed promise, concerns about depth remain.
The club has also secured a loan deal for Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo, who will add elite competition and cover to the backline. Jacquet has expressed enthusiasm about learning from Van Dijk, saying, "Training with him is going to be huge. He’ll teach me so much. It doesn’t get any better than that." Van Dijk’s experience will be invaluable, especially as he approaches the later stages of his career.
Final Pre-season Tests Against Como
Liverpool’s pre-season will wrap up with two matches against Como on Sunday. The first will be a behind-closed-doors game at the AXA Training Centre at noon, followed by a public match at 6 pm. Iraola may use the evening fixture as a final rehearsal before the Premier League season starts, possibly giving Jacquet playing time in the private session to build match fitness away from the spotlight.
