Amit Bhatia to Debut as Liverpool's Vice-Chairman at Anfield

A new power figure will be in the directors’ box at Anfield on Saturday – and he won’t be hiding in the background.

Amit Bhatia, Liverpool’s newly appointed vice-chairman, is expected to attend the club’s first home game of the Premier League season when Andoni Iraola’s side face Nottingham Forest. It will be the first public glimpse of the man now fronting a heavyweight new investment group on Merseyside.

Bhatia, 46, only left QPR last month after an 18-year spell as co-owner and director. He now leads 1892 Holdings, the consortium that has bought around 38 per cent of Liverpool from Fenway Sports Group (FSG) in a deal worth just over £2bn.

This is not a quiet stake from a distant hedge fund. Based in London and already embedded in English football’s boardrooms, Bhatia is expected to be a far more regular and visible presence at Anfield than the other major figures behind the money or FSG’s existing hierarchy.

And those figures are substantial. The 1892 Holdings group includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, both billionaires operating from opposite sides of the globe. Bezos is based in the United States, Saverin in Singapore, which only underlines why Bhatia, on the ground in the UK, will become the public face of the consortium.

His influence will stretch well beyond matchday appearances. Bhatia is taking a seat on an expanded Liverpool board, which will also feature Elaine Saverin, wife of Eduardo Saverin, and Bryan Baum. Baum is representing Bezos through K5 Sports, a venture capital firm he founded and which is acting as Bezos’ vehicle in the deal.

For all the fanfare, the takeover remains in a crucial procedural phase. The agreement is still subject to sign-off from the new Independent Football Regulator, while all involved must clear the Premier League’s owners’ and directors’ test before the structure is fully locked in.

When FSG confirmed the sale of a minority stake to 1892 Holdings, Bhatia made his intentions clear.

“We are incredibly proud to be investing in Liverpool Football Club and to be doing so alongside FSG,” he said. “We have the utmost respect and admiration for FSG as owners and for everything they have achieved at Anfield. To be welcomed as a partner in a club of this stature is a huge privilege.

“We are making this investment because we believe deeply in Liverpool and its leadership, and we look forward to supporting the club's continued success for years to come.”

The words set the tone. Saturday at Anfield will show how the actions begin.
