Amir Rrahmani Retires from Kosovo National Team

Amir Rrahmani has walked away from Kosovo. Not quietly. Not gently. And not without leaving a deep scar on his national team.

The Napoli centre-back, 32, has announced his retirement from international football after a decade in the shirt and 66 caps, ending a seven-year spell as captain in a blistering public break with the Football Federation of Kosovo (FKK).

A captain walks, and slams the door

Rrahmani confirmed his decision on Friday evening, stripping Kosovo of their on-field leader in the middle of a stormy stand-off with the federation. This was no routine farewell from a veteran easing into the final phase of his career. It was a protest.

He took to Instagram to make it clear: he did not feel he could continue under the current leadership of the FKK.

"After ten years with the national team, seven of which were spent as captain, I am announcing that I will no longer be part of the Kosovo national team as long as the FKK is led by its current individuals,” he wrote.

Those words hit like a statement of no confidence. From the captain, no less.

“Constant, co-ordinated attacks”

Rrahmani did not stop at a simple resignation. He laid out years of frustration with the national setup, describing a federation that, in his view, failed to support its players and ignored long-standing problems.

He spoke of “numerous factors, persistent disagreements and a lack of competent people available to address our problems and grievances,” adding that the situation “has remained unimproved for years.”

Then came the most damning line.

"And what did I get in return? Constant, co-ordinated attacks for more than two years from those people who should have been protecting us. Justice will prevail one day.

"This decision comes from the need to preserve my integrity as a captain and as a professional footballer, but above all, my values as a human being."

These are not the words of a player simply tired of travel and international windows. They read like the closing argument of someone who feels betrayed by his own federation.

A gaping hole for Kosovo

On the pitch, the loss is obvious. Rrahmani has been the backbone of Kosovo’s defence and the face of the team’s leadership for most of its modern history. His presence brought top-level experience from Serie A, where he has already passed 200 appearances for Napoli and remains a key figure in their back line.

Now Kosovo must replace not just a starting centre-back, but their most experienced and influential voice in the dressing room. A new captain must be found. A new hierarchy must be built. All while the federation sits under the shadow of his accusations.

The timing and tone of his exit turn what could have been a routine changing of the guard into a full-blown institutional question.

Door closed – but not locked

Despite the strength of his words, Rrahmani left a small opening. His retirement is tied directly to the current leadership of the FKK. Change the people at the top, and the conversation about his return could reopen.

For now, though, he is done with international football. His focus turns fully to Napoli and Serie A, where he continues to anchor one of Italy’s most respected defences.

Kosovo, meanwhile, are left to navigate a new era without their captain, under a leadership their former leader no longer trusts. The next move belongs to the federation – and the clock is already ticking.
