Alvaro Arbeloa Signs Angel to Fulham from Real Madrid

Alvaro Arbeloa has gone back to what he knows best.

After opening his first Premier League campaign with two straight defeats, the Fulham head coach has returned to Valdebebas for reinforcements, raiding Real Madrid once more to bring in 22-year-old midfielder Angel.

It is a move rooted in trust and familiarity. Arbeloa made Angel captain of his Real Madrid Castilla side and later handed him his senior debut when both were promoted mid-season. Angel responded by forcing his way into Carlo Ancelotti’s squad, making four La Liga appearances and featuring in the Champions League.

Now, their paths cross again in west London.

Angel has signed a three-year contract with Fulham, with the option of a further 12 months. Standard Sport understands the deal begins as a one-year loan, which will automatically become permanent for £18.3 million. The club have confirmed he will then be tied down to a long-term agreement.

The midfielder spoke warmly about the coach who has shaped much of his early career.

“I’ve known him for many years from the Real Madrid youth academy, and he’s a coach who brings out the best in players, gets the most out of each one and, most importantly, understands them.

“Now, he’s going to be coaching me at a higher level, and I must give him the same intensity and commitment – or even more – than ever before.”

Angel arrives as part of a busy summer under Arbeloa. Fulham had already signed Shea Charles and Real Madrid duo Gonzalo Garcia and Cesar Palacios, underlining how heavily the Spaniard has leaned on his contacts at his former club.

There is a clear squad reshaping under way. Angel, previously a league and cup winner with Malmo, effectively steps into the space left by Sasa Lukic, who joined Ipswich Town on a permanent deal earlier in the window. The profile fits: young, technically secure, with experience of pressure games despite his age.

For Angel, this is a landmark step.

“It’s a very proud moment for me and my family – I’m honoured to be here,” he said after signing his contract.

He is not the only fresh face aiming to hit the ground running. Both Angel and Larsson are targeting their Fulham debuts this weekend, when the Cottagers host Crystal Palace at Craven Cottage.

Arbeloa has turned to familiar hands to steady a shaky start. Now the question is simple: can his Madrid core drag Fulham up the table?
