Álvarez Rejects Man City Return Amid Barcelona Ambitions
Julián Álvarez has slammed shut the Etihad door before Manchester City even had the chance to knock properly.
According to Cadena SER, City contacted Atlético Madrid to sound out a sensational reunion with their former striker, only to be told in no uncertain terms that Álvarez has no intention of returning to Manchester. His message to the Premier League champions was so firm that talks never even reached the stage of a formal bid.
It is the latest twist in a transfer saga that has dominated the summer.
England says come back. Álvarez says no.
At 26, Álvarez finds himself in open conflict with Atlético, locked in a standoff that has dragged on for weeks. Arsenal have made him their priority signing, the centrepiece of their attacking plans, and have tried repeatedly to lure him to north London.
He has turned them down every time.
The Argentine’s stance is clear: if he leaves Atlético, he wants Barcelona. Nothing else. No London. No Manchester.
Barcelona already tested Atlético’s resolve earlier in the window with a €100 million (£86m) offer. It was rejected. Even so, Barça have not hidden their intentions. President Joan Laporta went public this week, openly acknowledging that it is “common knowledge” Álvarez wants to wear the Blaugrana shirt.
That desire is not in doubt. The problem is everything around it.
Atlético’s hard line
Atlético have drawn a thick red line through any deal with Barcelona. Club figures in Madrid have doubled down in recent days, insisting there is a “zero per cent chance” of selling their star striker to a direct Liga rival.
Zero. Not low. Not unlikely. Zero.
So while Álvarez pushes for Catalonia, Atlético refuse to even open the door. That leaves the forward in a tight corner: the only English club seriously on the table is Arsenal, and the only destination he truly wants is effectively blocked.
Cadena SER report that Álvarez has been reminded, bluntly, that Arsenal are his only realistic escape route from the Metropolitano. He still refuses to move back to England.
Personal life over Premier League lights
This is not about footballing doubts. It is about life off the pitch.
Álvarez’s reluctance to return to England is understood to be driven by personal circumstances, particularly UK visa rules that would make it far harder for his family to visit regularly. In Spain, those complications vanish. The choice, for him, is straightforward: stay in a country where his family can come and go freely.
It marks a stark contrast to his first spell in England. When he arrived at Manchester City from River Plate for £14m in January 2022, he embraced the challenge. Across 103 appearances he scored 36 goals, played his part in Pep Guardiola’s historic Treble, and left two summers ago in an £82m move to Atlético with his reputation enhanced.
Now, with his stock high and his career in its prime, he is drawing a line under any return to the Premier League.
A saga at a standstill
The result is a transfer deadlock.
City have been rebuffed before they could even test Atlético’s resolve. Arsenal remain keen but unwanted by the player. Barcelona want him, Álvarez wants them, yet Atlético will not negotiate.
The forward is effectively boxed in: a club that will not sell him where he wants to go, and a player who will not go where the exits currently exist.
Unless someone blinks before the window closes, Álvarez’s next big decision may not be about a transfer at all, but whether he can repair a fractured relationship in Madrid and park the Barcelona dream — at least for one more year.
